David Spier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2017.
Spier, David Lynn

David Spier, age 52, died at home on September 11, 2017, in Blauvelt, New York. He was preceded in death by brother Frederick Spier, Jr. He is survived by loving wife Cameron, daughter Katelyn, parents Frederick and Nancy Spier, sister Tina (Jeffery) Hover, sisters-in-law Elaine Spier and Courtney (Luis) Garcia, and in-laws Eric and Linda Schroeder.

He is also survived by nieces and nephews Jeffery Hover, Jr., Jessica (Bryan) Smith, Jacinda Hover, Jarrett Hover (Kristine), William (Mawi) Spier, Justin Spier, and Soren Garcia; five great-nieces and -nephews; and many cherished lifelong friends and colleagues.

A uniquely gifted musician, Dave graduated from Cicero High School, SUNY Fredonia, and the Manhattan School of Music. He was a renowned and highly respected musician. He enjoyed a successful career on Broadway, most recently playing trumpet for the entire 11-year run of Jersey Boys.

Along with his extraordinary musical gifts, Dave was an avid fisherman. He was also a passionate and knowledgeable wine enthusiast, and a devoted golfer.

After living more than 20 years in Manhattan, he and Cam moved to Rockland County, where they welcomed their beloved daughter Katelyn into the family. Dave was a caring and devoted father to Katelyn, who filled his heart with immeasurable joy and pride every day of his life. We will all miss his incomparable talent, his infectious sense of humor, and his loving devotion to family and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 15, from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, New York (845-735-2161, wymanfisher.com). Memorial services to follow at a later date.

I just recently learned of Dave's passing from a fellow musician. I am so sorry for his family's loss and offer my deepest condolences.I used to carpool with Dave a few years back when I was playing for "Spiderman"and also played some gigs with him (and his wife) with The Orangeburg Wind Band. I remember him as a wonderful human being, proud parent, and fine musician. All of my love goes out to his family.

My thoughts are with you all still. What an extraordinary man he was. I believe the last time I saw him he was playing trumpet, with the Gulf Of Mexico behind him in St. Pete.

Dear Family and Friends of David,

I sit here in dismay at the (late) news of David's passing. I knew David from Jersey Boys as a fellow musician in the Pit. He was always a hello and a smile. He always reassured me to not worry when running late to work b/c of traffic. He crossed my mind only last week.... His obituary is in the Musicians' paper from Local 802..... that's how I learned, as I'm sure so many others will now know.

He was an amazing musician and such a wonderful person. I'm sure he shall be missed greatly. To his family and friends I wish you all my deepest condolences.... The truest spirit he was. His light shall be remembered.

Most Sincerely,
Mary Ann Ivan

I was just googling to find David, having come across his business card from many years ago when he used to play on the balcony of my home on 51st Street in Manhattan to welcome guests to my annual Christmas party. My fondest memory was of him and his brass quartet playing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen while a dusting of snow was falling and passers by were in rapt attention listening to the beautiful music.
I am so sorry to find this news and my condolences to his family. He will surely be missed.

Words cannot express our feeling of sadness. David and his family have been our good friends since we met. David and my son, Tony were friends in high school, marching band, worked together, ski, fish and camp. His parents, Nancy and Fred became babysitters for my daughter, Crystal. They were more than a babysitter, they were grandparents to her. Their granddaughter, Jessica became Crystal's best friend. David would come to my house and Crystal would get so excited to see him. He had the most beautiful smile and great laugh. He was always so polite and well mannered. His family and friends were all so proud of his accomplishments. I'm still having a hard time absorbing his death. Nancy, Fred and family please accept our condolences.

My sympathy and love to the Spier family. I was David's neighbor and we road the school bus together. I remember ever morning David's mom would comb his hair just before he got on the bus. He was always dressed so nice. Rest in peace my friend.

Dave let his daughter pick out their donations for toy drive. He was sincerely grateful for the opportunity to help children in need and you could tell how grateful he was to be a dad by the way he instilled thoughtfulness in Katelyn.
Thank you for the memories at The Music Man and Jersey Boys, Dave. Love to your beautiful family.

To the family, I've not seen Dave since high school, but he was such a great guy. The world will be a little more quiet, have a little less horn playing, and have a space where he once was. Please know that he is remembered, thought of, loved, and now missed.

My earliest memories of David were from Panther Lake. My family had a camp a stones throw from the Spiers camp. I was about 8 years old and he was a year younger, putting him app. in the 2nd grade. When the sun was setting, David would play Taps, it was spot on and you could hear it clear across the lake. Even at that early age he was destined for success, and now he is sitting lead chair in heaven's orchestra. Ci Vediamo In Paradiso.

Dave, you were a great family friend!! I have so many great memories of you and my family and all the laughs, mostly at your expense!! Lol You were always looked up to and even still to this day!! I'm glad you were such a great friend to my brother and how you always made my sister light up when you walked into the room when she was little. Being a little younger than you and my brother, I always looked up to you all and wanted to be that good as a musician someday!! That influence drives me still to this day my friend!! Your mom and dad were always so proud of you and would give me updates on how you were doing every time I saw them. I'm so glad that I had the chance to see you recently and chat a bit at my store, maybe that happened for a reason!! I hope you find peace now at the biggest gig in the universe. Till we meet again my friend!!

I went to Cicero High School and played in the band with David. I was a year older than him and I vividly remember when he first came to marching band practice in the summer before his freshman year. I had heard of a really good trumpet player who was coming up, but I had no idea how talented he actually was. Even as a teenager, he had the sound of a seasoned professional - it was extraordinary! And he was the kindest and funniest kid...and a true, true friend. Heaven has gained a very special angel. To his wife and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. Spier and the rest of his family...my most heartfelt condolences.
