Family-Placed Obituary

DAVID HAROLD WOODSIDE Age 84 passed away on June 24, 2008. He was born in Kapaau, Kohala, Hawaii; the youngest child of Walter Byron Woodside and Mildred Alma Leialoha Luscomb Woodside. In 1939, Dave began his wildlife career assisting pioneer botanist and ornithologist George C. Munro band seabirds on offshore islets of Oahu. At age 15 Dave was a founding member of the Hawaii Chapter of the Audubon Society, remaining an active member all his life. For 27 years Dave worked for the Hawaii Division of Fish and Game and was instrumental in the Nene Restoration Project and recovery plans for Hawaii's bird species. After retiring from the State, he spent 22 years working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the National Wildlife Refuge Complex and Ecological Services programs. He was critical to refuge establishment projects for the Oahu Forest; Kona Forest Unit of Hakalau; Palmyra Atoll; and Kingman Reef. Dave mentored and advised innumerable employees of the State, USFWS, non-profit organizations and students with his vast knowledge and decades of experience regarding Hawaii's flora and fauna. He is survived by his wife Leianaikaroselaniomaui Long Woodside; daughters, Healani Holt, Hokulani Holt and Ulalia Woodside; grandchildren Luukia Ruidas, Lono Padilla, and Kaniau Kaianui; and great-grandchild Kalanikauikeaokiekie Ruidas. He is also survived by sister Maylien Grosjean, nephews and nieces; Byron Woodside, Carl Woodside, Sandy Crowley Hake, Brian Crowley, Sharon Crowley Harbord, Patti Grosjean Law, Robert "Robbie" Grosjean, Peggy Luscomb, Chip Luscomb and Peter Luscomb. We will celebrate the life and contributions of Dave "Kawika" Woodside and scatter his ashes at his home on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Updated on 07/19/2008.

Dear Leiana, Ulalia, and family:

My deepest sympathies are extended to you during this time of sorrow. May your memories lighten your hearts. Dave's legacy lives on and on in his family, friends, and the beauty of Hawaii's natural resources he helped to protect and conserve and teach others about. I am so glad for the time Dave spent with me as mentor, friend, and colleague. I was very fortunate to have his knowledge to help me and was very lucky to work with him. He enjoyed going into the forest and onto the remote islands, and he loved nature, our projects, birds (of course), and he always talked so fondly of his family. Dave had a wonderful, happy life and he was very well loved. Aloha, Phyllis

Aloha e Woodside 'Ohana,
Please accept our sincere sympathy and aloha in the recent passing of your husband, father and grandfather, Brother Woodside. His quiet way of teaching allowed all of us the opportunity to learn more than what we had expected and for those moments we are sincerely grateful. We will remember him along with you all in our prayers daily. Malama pono,

Paul P. Richards and 'Ohana
