Dennis Eberhart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2025.
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Dennis Jay Eberhart, who left us peacefully on August 3rd, 2025. Dennis was born in Miami, Florida to Bill and Lea Eberhart. Dennis's father spent a career of service in the Air Force providing the family a childhood of adventure before finally settling in Phoenix, Arizona in 1968.

Dennis spent his 72 years embracing life to the fullest. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Sunny Eberhart, with whom he shared a lifetime of laughter, unwavering love and adventure.

Dennis is survived by his brother Wayne Eberhart, sister in-law Donna Eberhart and sister Diana Eberhart, brother-in-law Stephen Eberhart. Dennis was a proud father to his two sons Joel Eberhart and Brandon Eberhart, father-in-law to Katie Eberhart. He wore the title of "Papa D" with pride and joy to his three grandchildren - Ethan, Gwen and Alexis. Who were the light of his life.

Known for his love of running trails and chasing fairways, Dennis was a avid runner and golfer. A few of Dennis's running accomplishments include winning the 1978 North Bank 10K, qualifying for the 1980 Olympic trials, earning All American honors at GCC, setting the 10,000 meter and marathon school records at Oklahoma Christian University, winning the 60 mile "Man against Horse" race and finishing 12th in the Boston Marathon.

Dennis had a legendary sense of humor and the kind of quick comebacks that kept everyone laughing. But beyond humor he had a heart of pure gold. Always the first to lend a hand, encourage a stranger, or support a friend.

Dennis was deeply loved as a husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be forever missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. We will carry his love, his laughter and his legacy in our hearts always.

What I remember most about Dennis was that he was a great friend to my sister, Kathy. She ran at Glendale Community College with the guys because at that time, there wasn't a women's team. I loved going to see her practice or compete and Dennis was always very supportive of her. He also liked joking around and making us laugh, always with a twinkle in his eye. RIP, Dennis. I look back fondly on those childhood memories.

Dennis was instrumental in helping me get my first job at Athletes Foot in Metro Center Mall. I remember him being a bit of a goofy guy who loved to talk himself up. He was always this confident sort of cocky dude that more than often backed it up. He used to come out to Glendale Community College in the late 70's and run with us from time to time. I remember road racing against him many times and never beat him. I always had respect for him and looked up to him. I believe he also won the Mexicali Marathon twice. His passing is a reminder to live every day like it is your last. I hope his legacy lives on through Ethan in part. RIP Dennis.
