In 1955 at Cheyenne High School, Dennis approached me about starting a barbershop quartet. I didn't know him at the time but we became best friends throughout our high school years. He was the driving force of the Flapjacks and we performed over 160 times until we graduated in 1958. Many good times as we traveled as a group, including a trip to Chicago and a spot on the Don McNeal Breakfast Club, a nationally broadcast radio program popular at the time. We sang together one time at our 20th high school reunion, minus our lead, Danny Trevino, with Lindy Davis filling in with the melody. Good times. Thanks Dennis.

My wife and I spent several summers at Bit-O-Wyo. Dennis and his crew made us feel at home. On our last visit, we were just passing through. Dennis showed me where he hid the door key, and said stop by anytime. He was a true friend.
The world has lost a truly great man. I can only say tht I feel blessed to have known him. Happy Trails, old friend.

It was Dennis Steele who first led me to the Lord! How inspiring to read Dennis' life story. All of God's creation speaks of His Glory. Dennis knew this, and it fueled his brilliant and inquisitive mind. In the late 70's, Dennis wrote a book, "An Introduction to Elementary Computer and Compiler Design". Some 25 years later, as a struggling, lost soul atheist in my mind twenties, I discovered Dennis' book at a library. Dennis' love for teaching produced a work that made crystal clear part of the mystery of God's creation...the nature and operation of a fully functioning computer. It was a lot of work to fully grasp his book, but something inside me kept telling me that this was the book that would make it all clear. I ended up making an enormous, laminated "map" of the entire computer Dennis designed and detailed in his book, and over one or two weeks, slowly, painstakingly traced through the operation of this computer...step by step with dry erase markers on the laminated map. I'll never forget the moment that the light went off...and I understood, because this is the exact same moment that the thought came to me..."you know, there is nothing in a computer that could ever be conscious or self-aware", and at that moment my atheist world view was shattered. The door had swung wide open for me to receive Jesus as King, Lord and Savior...which a few weeks later I did!
Dennis and I never met, but I know without a doubt that one day we will in the Kingdom of Heaven. God bless you, family and friends of Dennis!

P.S.
In the spirit and memory of Dennis, a man who loved God and learning, I would love to share my experience building Dennis' computer with anyone who is interested. If you want to chat about God and the faith, I would love to connect. Please reach out. I can be reached at [email protected]

Please accept our delayed condolences. Miranda, Grace, and I just learned of Dennis's passing. We all love the family and are thinking of you , and the wonderful times we had working together.
Truly, such pleasant experiences are to be recalled with fondness and savored like a fine bourbon. Dennis was one of a kind. Thank you for including us in some of those magical moments at the Bit O' Wyoming.
With love and respect,
Nathan Maine and family

We were telephone friends and he put me to sleep with his stories at night. I loved him. Your heart soon will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Some of my most favorite summers have been working at the ranch. I´m forever grateful Doc gave me a chance and let me grow in my horsemanship with his herd as a guide. I loved working the dinner shows and listening to doc and the band play afterwards. Regularly when I would check in he would be watching RFDTV or a western. He always had great memories he would share with me about his children and grandchildren. And it´s true...paint it blue. I´ve painted several gates on the ranch blue. I think often about Doc and Molly, their family, Jake, hiya, the ranch, and his herd of beautiful horses.

An incredible boss, a kind friend, and a wise mentor are just a few of the things that Doc was to my husband and I in the few years we knew him. I hope to see him again in heaven one day when he will be riding a "strawberry roan" (a song we talked about regularly). We miss you Doc.
