Derek Lacey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 17 to Jun. 30, 2009.
Derek Lacey – the voice of Carlisle United on BBC Radio Cumbria – died today.
News of the popular commentator’s death – a day after he suffered a major stroke – was broken to the station’s listeners this lunchtime.
BBC colleagues, who have described him as a “dear friend”, were devastated by his death, as were executives at Carlisle United.
Mr Lacey, who was aged in his sixties, enjoyed a cult following among Blues fans for his colourful match commentary of the League One club’s fortunes.
He had been treated by medics in Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary after being rushed in following a stroke yesterday.
News of his illness had prompted messages of goodwill from his colleagues and United fans, who regarded him as a fellow supporter.
The grandfather, Radio Cumbria’s Carlisle commentator since 1998, was a popular figure around Brunton Park with players, officials and fans.
He had relayed the kick-by-kick action at more than 500 Carlisle matches and was perhaps best known for his passionate reaction when on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass scored an injury-time winner to keep United in the football league 10 years ago.
Mr Lacey has also achieved a cult following among supporters for his occasional slips of the tongue while commentating. He always, however, took this with good humour.
He grew up in north London, but his job with Royal Mail brought him to Carlisle in 1969 and he began following United.
While working later for the NHS in the city as a psychiatric nurse, he became a hospital radio volunteer and presented a sports programme, leading to his work with the BBC.

I used to work at CFM covering Carlisle United matches for them, during the League Two winning season of 2005-06, so I got to meet Derek Lacey on a regular basis.

He was such a nice bloke and willing to help me out even if I was just a young lad at a 'rival' commercial radio station.

I saw him again earlier this season when Carlisle came to play Walsall, who I was covering that day, and I was quite privileged cos he remembered me! And once again he was nice and helpful!

He definitely had a cult following and will be really missed. Carlisle United commentaries won't be the same without his voice on them.

RIP Derek.

So saddened to hear this news, covering a local football club can be tough over a long season but Derek was a ray of sunshine and always had a smile on his face the times i met him.

He was also very helpful sharing team info when he could have ignored this young commercial commentator.

Best wishes to all who knew him

We listened to Derek's commentary every Saturday, or Tuesday evening, following the fortune of Carlisle United. The programme were always entertaining, irrespective of the results, and the enthusiasm of Derek for the Blues (No Bias!!!) made the commentaries memorable listening. A VERY HARD ACT TO FOLLOW.
Rest in peace, Degsy.

I would like Derek's family to know we are all thinking of them in this sad time and would like you to know my family and I were priviledges to know such a special person.
We will not only miss Derek for his commentory on match days but over the past year me and my family grew to know Derek personally through my son Connor being seriously ill with meningitus in Newcastle Genersl. Derek made it possible for Two united players to visit Connor in hospital and be presented with a signed shirt and we also got to meet Derek in person to thank him for what he had done for us all in our hard times. He kept in contact on numerous occassions to see how Connor and us were and always kept our spirits up.
Derek you will be greatlly missed but never be forgotten

So Jeff, do you think we need to change the formation? OH! WHAT A SHOT! GREAT SAVE, WHAT A SCRAMBLE! A DEFLECTION, OH MY WORD! OH! O OH! The, the shot was deflected, he saved it, it went out, a corner I think. Who to Derek? Derek was such a fan that he would get as excited as any other fan and the fact that it got confusing just made the commentary even more realistic. You really will be so missed next season Derek. Condolencies to all your family and friends.

With the passing away of Degsie, we say goodbye to a Real Gentleman, a genuine nice guy, someone who would always pass the time of day with you, share his opinions, have a laugh and a joke ,and all without any malice or intent.
His unique style of commentary was enjoyed by all. We've been taken through the Rollercoaster ride of the Highs and Lows of following Carlisle United in his own inimitable manner.
Sadly, there will be no more Happy, Smiling face, looking down at us from the back of C stand now, and the commentary box will somehow now appear a little 'darker'.
Today the world of Radio broadcasting has lost a Real Legend, and we, a true Gentleman.
Our condolences go out to his family at this particular time, but also can we give thanks to them for allowing us to 'share' degsy, when he was broadcasting.
Very sadly missed......

I am not a real football fan but always listen to Radio Cumbria on the way home from work and obviously have tuned into Derek. Instead of switching off I have listened and been entertained by Derek's enthusiasm and passion. He became a voice I knew and looked forward to hearing and I am gutted I will not hear that voice and that passion anymore. I am so glad he died enjoying something he absolutely adored but send my heartfelt condolences to his family and the hundreds of people who will miss him.

first may i say i'm not an avid supporter of carlisle united i much prefer the oval ball game of rugby league having played professionally for workington town, st helens, cumbria, england & gt. britain.
but on most saturday afternoons i tuned in to radio cumbria to listen to the match report from the one & only derek lacey. he made it compulsive listening & epitomised what reporting about "his" team really meant to him.
as a reporter he had no peers in my view, saturday's will never be the same again as no one could ever take his place, a very sad day not just for football but for the legend that is derek lacey.

Derek you will be a huge miss to us, our football club and our city. Such a gentleman, who had time for everyone. His commentary was so entertaining and always had me on the edge of my seat. I feel privileged to have known Derek as I was growing up and always felt a warmth when I switched on the radio for away games and heard his voice. Loved the 'Laceyisms' and no matter how confusing it got or how many scorelines/players names were mixed up, I could listen to Derek commentate on my team all day long!

Forever in our hearts, you touched many people all over the country Derek. Keep an eye on how we're doing from up there, as you always say Carlisle don't do midtable obscurity.

A man who symbolises everything good in a person. A true gent, passionate and loyal and a very funny man also. He was able to make the worst days seem not as bad and show that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Carlisle United was his life and his commentary made it many other people's life too. One of these characters who simply will never be replaced. I'm too sad to listen to cvommentary any more.

Derek, a true legend. Take your rightful place directly above Brunton and watch us all tear through countless emotions as you call all the players the wrong names.

RIP Derek lacey

A gentleman in every sense of the word.
One of a rare breed of people who could laugh at themselves and with more gaffs than Murray Walker he endeared himself to Carlisle fans all over the world.
And for the thousands of Blues fans scattered around the globe or those just unable to get to matches he was the definitive voice of Carlisle United. I am privileged to have been able to call him a friend and add to that some of our moments in the Radio Cumbria commentary box over the years that have elevated him to legendry status he will be sorely missed. My sincere condolences to his family.
Keep that glass half full Derek.
