Dewey Ryan "Billy" Fortune Jr.

Dewey Ryan "Billy" Fortune Jr., 80, of Richmond, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond after a brief illness.

He was born March 25, 1928 in Schuyler, Virginia, the eldest son of the late Dewey Ryan Fortune Sr. and Mary Micklem Fortune.

Mr. Fortune was a graduate of Schuyler High School, the University of Alabama, and the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. During World War II, he served in the United States Army. He retired as a senior executive with Dominion Bankshares Corporation, now part of Wachovia.

Mr. Fortune was active in the communities where he lived and held leadership positions in the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Rotary Club of Richlands, Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Boyce Heath Fortune.

He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Boyce Fortune and her husband, John L. Handloser of Palmyra; a son D. Ryan Fortune III and his wife, Jane (Saunders), of Richmond; two brothers, Albert Joseph Fortune of Covington, Georgia, and George Austen Fortune of Amherst; a sister, Jane Fortune Markwood of Chester; two granddaughters, Sarah and Caroline; and a grandson, Campbell.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Glendower, 900 Glendower Road, Scottsville, 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Christ Church Glendower Cemetery Fund., P.O. Box 337, Scottsville, Virginia 24590.

Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville is handling the arrangements.
