Dine Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2025.
Dine Wray Smith, 70, passed away on September 6, 2025, in the company of his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pocatello, ID on October 2, 1954.

Dine was a true original; his name was just the beginning. He could be found wearing a smile, Hawaiian shirt, well-loved hat and vest "to keep his core warm," all with a cold beverage in hand. He loved laughter, storytelling, and a good party, of which he was often the last to leave. Few may know that Dine was once a member of the United States Croquet Association; he would participate in Kansas City Croquet Tournaments in the late 70s and early 80s, seen by some as an excuse to throw a massive party with official t-shirts.

Dine was an avid oarsman who shared a deep love for whitewater rafting. He would introduce the magic of the river to many others for over thirty years. He loved bringing people together to celebrate special occasions including full moons, parades, festivals, and holidays with damn good food and drink, and every once in a while, a rich cigar. He was also a loyal Denver Broncos fan, through thick and thin. If anyone was to ask Dine if he lived a good life, he would say, "Does a fat baby poop?" with a smile on his face.

His career began as a mechanic who favored Fords, despite how frequently he would say another four-letter F-word when working on them. Following his mechanic days, he worked at the Idaho National Laboratory for many years.

He was among the original group who developed the first Idaho Beer Fest in 1995 and was a respected and decorated beer judge with a refined palate; going so far as to prohibit certain domestic "beers" from crossing the threshold of his home, even when offered by his son-in-law.

A proud member of the Blackfoot Elks Lodge for over 40 years, Dine held numerous officer roles at both local and state levels.

Dine valued family, friendship, and being of service to his community. He took pride and joy in helping to raise three good kids, and watching them grow into three great adults. One of his greatest joys was being Grandpa! He loved making his grandchildren giggle and giving them bear hugs.

Dine is survived by his spouse Cari; children Matea Thompson (Lorin), Erin, and Anthony; grandchildren Emerly and Kai; and siblings Beth, Dona, and John. Dine was preceded in death by his parents Majorie "Jo" and Rulon "Wray" Smith, as well as his aunt Maxine.

Dine requested no funeral service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, though he would encourage anyone who wants to celebrate him to do it "their way." In lieu of flowers, please crack a cold beer and do something nice for someone who wasn't expecting it.

His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched through laughter shared on riverbanks, stories told by the fireside, and songs sung morning and night.

With many thanks to the St. Luke's Oncology team, Home Health team, and Hospice team for your kind and compassionate care.

I have read this tribute to Dine over and over. I've read it with tears and a smile on my face. I can hear Dine's voice, his laugh, and sometimes his conspiritual and witty commentary, often said in a near whisper followed by a chuckle. Gregg and I keep looking at the pictures too. It's just beautiful.

When my grandfather passed away, Dine arrived to the funeral in a bright yellow shirt. Which just so happened to be my grandfather´s favorite color and the color of the flower arrangements. Whether by accident or design, Dine brought joy and laughter to that somber occasion, and I´ll always smile at the memory of that day because of it. Sending my love and deepest condolences to Cari, Matea, Erin, Anthony, and their loved ones.

Dine and Cari, you opened up your home for me when I needed it, for that I am forever grateful. You let me be a part of his wonderful family for a year and I still find myself laughing about Dine´s quirks and thoughts about life. My thoughts go out to Cari, Matea, Erin and Anthony in this time. I will for sure crack open a beer next to a cozy fire in Dines honor first chance I get. Love to you all.

I only met Dine last year at a water aerobics class. We went out a couple of times afterwards and a good meal and a few beers. This year I was hoping he would come again so we could get to know each other better. It is clear he had a full life with lots of family and friends to enjoy it with, I wish I would have know him earlier. RIP Dine

Dine and I started out knowing each other as co-workers but rapidly became friends. He did such detailed and great work, that I hired him when I got my first opportunity. He could be trusted to make things right, and I appreciated him so much for that. But our years-long friendship was what mattered. He was the first person I met up with when I retired, a month after he retired (as my employee) and we shared a celebration mimosa. After our retirement when he was in Blackfoot, we met monthly (on his haircut days) to have a toddy and conversation In Pocatello. I loved those days.
I worked with Dine for over 20 years and he was so terrific to work with. I´m heartbroken about his passing. The only thing that really mattered to him was his family. I pray for all of you during this time that you find comfort knowing he´s watching over you and his spirit is with you. I loved and respected my friend. May peace be with you.

I met Dine through my dad, Dave Clapp, at an Elks convention many, many moons ago. Every time I saw him there was so much laughter, love and many libations. It was always a great time. I have no doubt they are having a cold one together. I am sending much love and light to the family and many prayers for peace in your hearts.

I loved Dine Smith. He taught me how to pour beer the right wat, how to cherish a beer, and to cook the best beer Dawgs. I loved his stories and looked forward to his visits every Thursday. He made Bone brighter every time he walked through the door. My heart aches for his pain and loves that he lived a life that lived each moment to its fullest. Cheers to the legendary man who leaves a legacy of charm, compassion, and courage. Cheers to you my dear friend! May the beer in heaven be bold and the angels wings keep it cold. Thank you for being part of my life
