Dolena Kann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Dolena Kann, age 101, passed away peacefully on April 15. It was a fitting day since her beloved second husband, the late Walter F. Kann, was a CPA. Dolena is survived by her son, Dennis Roy (Jan), and daughter, Christine Ratkovich (Dennis), plus her stepchildren Donna Bandemer (Tom), Dennis Kann (Lorraine) and Deborah Corteville (Peter). Also, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with one more grandchild arriving this summer. Dolena was born September 14, 1923, in London, Ontario, Canada, to Herbert Stephenson (whose parents had migrated from Yorkshire, England) and Flora Cook. While Dolena was at nursing training in Windsor, Ontario, she met and married her first husband, Roland Roy, in 1944. They separated in 1962. Three years later, Dolena met the true love of her life, Walter Kann (1918-2014) at a social function Dolena had arranged between the Windsor and Grosse Pointe Michigan "Parents Without Partners" groups. They married in 1966 and bought a new house in Grosse Pointe Woods for the combined family of six children and two cats. After Walter retired as a co-owner of a CPA firm, Walter and Dolena built their dream home on a lake in the gated community of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. They designed the house for family visits, of which there were many, with all arrivals welcomed by an array of Dolena's famous homemade pies. Dolena had an art studio in the home, and today all of her children's homes feature her gorgeous paintings. Walter and Dolena were also world travelers, visiting over 100 countries. They loved to tour stately homes and gardens, chateaus, museums, artist's studios and picturesque villages, and enjoyed photographing wildlife. They even rode elephants into the jungle in Nepal to photograph the rare white rhino. Dolena's funeral service will be July 26, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Christ of the Hills Church, 700 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village, AR. Following the service, her ashes will be interred next to Walter's in Grace Memorial Garden next to the church. Dolena, we'll miss you.

There are so many precious memories that will live on in all our memories. I have always remembered the good times and the lessons she taught me and the loving way they raised us.

For all the marvelous, wonderful, thoughtful, considerate things you did everyday...thank you! You have greatly influenced my life in so many ways. You are so remarkable because while making a difference in my life, you taught my friends with the same enthusiasm, kindness, and dedication. Blessed is the influence of one true human soul on another.
Brief is life but long is love. You will never be forgotten.

Grandma Dolena,

Thank you for everything that you did for all of us. I am going to remember all those memories of you. From all the visits to Arkansas, your cooking, swimming in Lake Balboa, and playing UPS and Kings in the Corner. I am going to miss you a lot.

To an amazing grandmother,

Thanks for having a beautiful house on Lake Balboa. Love visiting you and Grandpa Walter down there. I have so many fond memories of playing card games like Ups and Kings in the Corner, swimming in the lake, boat rides on the lake, eating the delicious pies that you made from scratch, arts and crafts, and celebrating many birthdays together. Missing you dearly.

As the best friend of Deb Kann (stepdaughter), I was also raised by Mrs. Kann. She was quite cultured and she made sure that Deb and I learned about the finer things in life. I will always remember when Mrs. Kann took Deb and I to the Fisher Theater to see Fiddler on the Roof with the great Topol in the lead role. I remember it like it was yesterday. Because of that memory, she will always be young to me. Mrs. Kann helped make me who I am today and I will be forever grateful that Mrs. Kann chose to include me in her mission to culture up Deb and myself from banshees to lovers of the arts. Thank you Mrs. Kann. Thank you so very much. You will always be remembered.
