Donald Alexander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 21, 2016.

Donald William Alexander, 67 was called home to our Lord on January 21, 2016 in Bryant, Arkansas. He was born on April 10, 1948 in Batesville, Arkansas to Pete and Norene Alexander.

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Anita Markham Alexander, his son Gregory Don (Debbie), grandsons Grayson Don and Gage Markham, his son Chris Darren (Terrah), grandson Rhys William, and a special sister-in-law Kathy Jolly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Don provided more than 40 years of service to Arkansas agriculture, including 35 years at the Arkansas State Plant Board, leading the agency as Director for 7 years. In 2002, he was named Executive Vice President of the Agricultural Council of Arkansas. Don served on a number of state and national boards and associations. These included induction into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame, the Arkansas Boll Weevil Foundation Board, the State Fair Advisory Board, the Fire Ant Advisory Board, and as president of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture. He received numerous awards including the Sturdy Oaks Award, the Southern Crop Production Association’s highest honor, the Don W. Beise Award, for service to agriculture and the ag chemicals industry, as well as the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture’s President’s Tribute for Distinguished Service.

He cherished his time spent with the Friday Night Dominos Gang and all of his hunting buddies and the Gunny Sack Hunting Club. As a young father, he became involved with the Bryant Optimist Club, also serving the City of Bryant as Alderman. During this time, he was an instrumental part of developing a grant for Alcoa 40 and developing Ashley Ball Park. During his time at Ashley Ball Park he touched many young men’s lives coaching baseball and many year-end fishing trips.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., Monday, January 25th, 2016 with services beginning at 10:00 a.m. at First Southern Baptist Church of Bryant, 604 S. Reynolds Road.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concern and kindness show to them during this time. May God Bless you. Special thanks to UAMS oncology doctors and nurses and Saline Memorial Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Men’s Ministry at First Southern Baptist Church of Bryant.

Anita, Greg and family. Your family has lost a great man and character who will be missed. He was actually fun to work with and always smiled, even if he was yelling at someone! (ha!) He was a great leader for the Plant Board during the time I worked there. Amelia (Looper) Trimble

I worked as the receptionist at the State Plant Board in 1980 right out of High School. Don Alexander was always smiling. His section was the fun office! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Don was a great member of the Bryant Optimist Club where he impacted many young men, not only in baseball, but also in how to face life's trials. He was a leader and great friend! I learned a lot about how to deal with people in a youth baseball program from Don. He was always the consummate gentleman! Anita and family, my prayers are with you.

Anita,

Kyle and I are very sorry for your family's loss of Don. He will certainly be missed by many. He was a great friend to me both personally and professionally over the years. He had a heart for Arkansas and for agriculture that was exceptional. I'll miss his counsel and the effort he took to provide "historical context" to some of my ideas. In other words, he wasn't afraid to say......."well.....you COULD try that,.....But, (insert wise anecdote here)." His ability to smile and laugh even during tough times continues to be an inspiration.

With Love,
Ben and Kyle Noble

My heart aches for you and all the family. I am so sorry for your loss, and so sorry I am not closer to be of better support for you during this time. I share your loss, and will always have a special place in my heart for Don. This is one of my favorite memories of Don lugging my daughter Marcia around when we visited in 1961.
