Donald Carlson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 15 to Dec. 17, 2015.
Don Carlson

Donald Wallace Carlson, beloved husband, father, papa, brother, and coach, passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2015 in his home surrounded by family.

Don was born on April 17, 1945 to John and Edith Carlson in Van Nuys, CA. His family returned to Missouri shortly after Don's birth, and he always felt so blessed to have grown up in small-town Republic, MO. Don played on Republic's 1963 state championship basketball team, and he still holds Republic's career rebounding record with 1,627 rebounds. He attended Missouri State University, and he was a member of their 1967 NCAA Division II runner-up team. Don was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991.

On August 18, 1967 Don married the love of his life, Phyllis Cox, who was his greatest source of strength and encouragement during his three-year journey with cancer. Don was a teacher for thirty years in Springfield Public Schools and coached at Kickapoo and Glendale receiving the Filbert Five award for outstanding achievement as an assistant basketball coach. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Don's devoted coaching partner, Mike Keltner, who led the DC-10 campaign in Don's honor which increased cancer awareness and collected funds to support cancer research.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Charles. Don is survived by his wife Phyllis, his daughters Natalie Allen (Geoff) and Christy Keller (Mark), and five cherished grandchildren, Zach and Libby Allen, and Katie, Alyssa, and Miles Keller, his sister Carol Bock (Kurt), sisters-in-law Libby West and Carol Carlson, special cousins Elizabeth Bolton and Jeanie Erb, along with many nieces and nephews, and treasured life-long best friend Jim Ferguson, whom he loved as family. We would like to thank Dr. Leo Shunyakov and his entire staff for their compassionate and loving care.

Don was a class-act who deserves two thumbs up for teaching us all how to face adversity with grace and courage. Don never met a stranger, and we invite all of his beloved friends to join us at a "BIG-TIME" memorial celebration service honoring his life on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 10 am at Central Christian Church with a reception and visitation immediately following in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Donald Carlson Memorial, Central Christian Church, 1475 N. Washington Ave., Springfield, MO, 65802, or to the MSU Foundation, Attn: Coach Bill Thomas Endowed Scholarship, Meyer Alumni Center, 300 S. Jefferson, Springfield, MO, 65806.

I am so grateful to have had the fortune of learning under Coach Carlson. He was a great teacher and an even greater person. He taught so many of us the true character of manhood with his examples of hard work, discipline, kindness, and humor. Thank you, coach, for your lasting influence on generations of young men.

I am a better person for having met and shared a few moments with Don Carlson. I am sorry that I wasn't able to attend his celebration. What a positive and genuine person. The light of the world dimmed for a moment when Don passed, but it's for the inspiration that he gave and shared that the light continues to shine for others.

Don attended my cancer support group and I will always remember when I asked him if he would like to attend he said "well Robert I will attend if it is not a "pity-patty group". with a big smile and a hug he then said I will be there! What a gentleman and inspiration for all cancer survivors .

Our family was fortunate to have Don and Phyllis as neighbors for many years. Don was a great inspiration to all that new him. We remember him helping young men as a mentor/friend. He always had encouraging words for all. May God comfort your family during this time. Phil, Kim, Heath, Megan and Miriam.

So sad to hear of Coach Carlson's passing. I was fortunate enough to be on his Glendale teams in 1985-87 and he made a lasting impression on me. Even all these years later, I often think of him and the way he led by example, both on and off the court, and his infectious enthusiasm for the game of basketball. Surely he is missed by many, as he had a positive impact on so many people through the years...Jay Stamatis

Don was a great man and I am fortunate to have met him. He was a great family man and indeed never seemed to know a stranger. My condolences to his family. He will be missed by many.

I am so very sad to know that Donnie died. When I was a little girl, we would visit my Grandpa Clarence Haworth in Republic. He lived across the road from Donnie and Edith. My Dad, Mother and brother thought well of his parents. My brother, Donnie Haworth was a great friend of your Donnie. He's gone to heaven to be with his mom and dad; and my parents, Leo & Lucille Haworth; and my brother, Donnie Haworth. Love and good thoughts to the Carlson family.

Don is one of those rare people who faced adversity with grace, gratitude and love. The last time I saw him was just a few weeks ago and a smile never left his face. He told me he loved me. Love you too Don. Now, send some signs!

My deepest condolences to the Carlson family.
I have known Don Carlson since I was a little guy watching the Bears play and watching Don be such a positive part of a great team.
Don was the most kind and supportive person I have ever been around. I will never forget the encouragement he gave to me and many others over the years, especially when things weren't so good. He will be missed on those days when fellow Bears gather and remember fun times, and just general conversation. Rest in Peace, and GO BEARS!
