Donald Errante Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 8 to Apr. 10, 2016.
Dr. Donald Errante

Calmly and peacefully passed away at home on March 31, 2016. Born on July 19, 1935 in Brooklyn, and a Marin resident for 50 years, Don was a devoted husband, father, physician, and friend to the many people with whom he came in contact.
Don entered Wesleyan University at the tender age of 16. A life-long lover of music, he relieved the stress of a demanding pre-med program by joining the marching band where his vigorous enthusiasm resulted in his breaking the bass drum he was playing. He was, despite this indiscretion, awarded a degree. Don's medical training was at the University of Rochester, followed by internship and residency in the Bronx where he developed his specialty in pediatrics. His military service followed beginning in 1963. Stationed in Livorno, Italy, Don was the only pediatrician at the sprawling military base, caring for more than 1,000 children. While in Italy, Don reveled in his Italian heritage, studying the language and refining his grandmother's inspired love for fine Italian cuisine. It was also in Italy that his life-long love of fast cars was nurtured.
In 1965 Don completed his military service and returned to the Bronx (Albert Einstein-Jacobi Medical Center) to undertake a one-year fellowship in psychiatry for pediatricians before moving to Mill Valley with his first wife, Eleanor and the first two of his three children (Valaine and Arien). Their third child (Elida) was born after they settled in California. The Errante family readily took to their new life and it was in Marin that Don began what became a treasured leisure activity of cycling. Soon Don and his cycling friends were exploring the area, including riding 100 and at one point, 200 miles in a day.
From 1966-1974 Don served as the principal pediatrician with a multidisciplinary team for a federally funded project for children and youth based at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco. In 1974 he joined what was then the original Marin County Pediatric practice of Dr. William Ball that included Dr. Stephen Kent and later Dr. George Monteverdi. Don was a consummate physician, and was concerned with treating the entire patient; body, mind, and spirit. Believing in the importance of psychological as well as physical health, Don developed a subspecialty and opened a behavioral and developmental private pediatric practice. Don was an uncommonly generous and caring person who was utterly devoted to his patients.
In 1985, Don married his second wife Lois and settled into life in Larkspur. Travel was of great interest to the couple, and their life was filled with many exotic adventures including numerous visits throughout Europe, trips to India, Peru, and a cycling tour of Vietnam. Also, a lover of music of all styles, Don, who played piano in his younger years, was a long-time subscriber to the San Francisco opera.
Don lived with Parkinson's disease for many years. Rather than succumbing, he became active in the Parkinson's community and made many new friends. He was especially active in the PD Dance movement and continued his cycling as long as possible. Don is survived by his wife Lois, his children Valaine, Arien, and Elida, stepchildren Glenn and Dan Young, grandchildren, Scott Young, Mitchell Young, and Allison, his brother Gerard, and his former wife Eleanor. A memorial service is being planned for Donald at the St. Vincent's School for Boys in San Rafael on Saturday, May 7, at 2:30.
This is an especially fitting setting as it was at the St. Vincent's School for Boys that Don spent 30 years caring for the boys there, following his life-long penchant for aiding those in less fortunate circumstances.
Don will be long remembered for the many lives he touched by his generosity, compassion, adventurous spirit, intellectual curiosity and infectious sense of humor. A memorial donation may be made in Don's name to the Parkinson's Dance Program (checks made out to Marin Dance Theater with PDP in the memo line).

I reread the above biography for the first time since Don“s passing. It was good to relive those memories. I trained in Pradiatrics with Don at Einstein in the 1960s, visited him at his Navy base in Italy, and later at his home in Marin. He was a wonderful person- I have missed his presence. My thoughts go out to Lois, Eleanor, and the family. Mathy and Andy Mezey

I was thinking about Dr. Errante today, he was my pediatrician, so I google him. So sad that he has passed. My quick story is fun though... I think he'll smile down on us for it. It might have been my last appointment as a teenager. It was a Friday, I was on vacation from boarding school and had to see the doctor for somehting. I noticed his beautiful blue Porsche 914-6 had a for sale sign in the window. He drove it to work on Fridays he later told me. It looked stock by had a blueprinted engine and drove like a lightning bolt. I wonder it so bad. I told my mom about it and Don actually came by our house in Upper Lucas Valley and took her (not me, grrrr) for a right up to big rock. He only wanted like 10 or 12K for it, but she said no. It was way too fast for me. If you know Lucas Valley road - especially before they widened it - it's a fantastically scary drive from the bottom to the top. She said he passed like 3 cars (no passing lanes) on the way up and down and said to her... "we're only on the other side for a second." This car was amazingly fast. He also told me had had this huge bruise on his thigh from a battery his daughter left on the floor from a trip to Sears point on the previous weekend. Hi hit a turn on the track and WHAM!... that battery took flight and wacked him in the leg. He also told me he loved listening to "ride of the Valkyries" while driving it. Amazing car. Amazing man. Don, I will always remember you and that amazing car that was too fast for me to have. I still want one... which is why I was googling Don. They cost over 100K now.

Don and I were friends at Wesleyan. With his infectious sense of humor, his easy generosity and his love of his NY family, which I visited in 1955, he had a strong and positive influence on my life. And I still tell some of his jokes, albeit without his fabulous gestures and laughter.

Dr. Errante was my childhood doctor for about 16 years. I have fond memories of going to see him. Even when I was sick or hurt, he had such a soothing voice it always made me feel better. I can still hear it. His gentle demeanor made me feel calmer and that he would take care of me. He seemed like the kind of guy that was incapable of being mean. I can remember getting shots, which my sister and I hated, and afterwards he would take us to the front to pick out a pencil. Good man. RIP

To a Very Special Man. Would not have had such wonderful and dedicated work ethics if it had not been for Dr. Errante. I was always remembered by him as the FAZ!!! You will be so dearly missed by your family, former patients, and colleagues. Dr. Errante and I used to exchange Italian words and sayings while working in the office. Our families coming from the same regions in Italy. You will always have a special place in my heart.
"GOD BLESS YOU"

Much love to Lois and the family.

What a wonderful pediatrician and human being he was. I had the respected pleasure of working with Dr. Errante on Mt. Zion pediatrics for a special program funded by the San Francisco Foundation to bring parents into the pediatric unit to care for their child and to stay overnight with their child. The program was called Care With Parent and was based on the belief that minimizing the separation trauma of the child would be best for their healing and reduce the trauma of a hospitalization.

Dr. Errante was kind and compassionate with children and was funny! He was my child's first pediatrician, of course. When I asked if I could wait outside when my child was receiving her first shot, he said absolutely not. He told me I had to be present to support her.

He was a gem and an excellent role model for the many pediatricians who trained at Mt. Zion. He referred many children to me as a psychologist and it was always a pleasure to confer and collaborate with him on a case. He will be missed. Lynn Noonan, Ph.D.

Very sad news.

Dr. Errante was my Dr. until my teens. I remember him being comforting and warm and healing me.

He was there at my most painful moments of suffering as a child.

I remember marveling at a picture of him racing a porsche 914. I remember the pictures he had of his beautiful kids on his desk. I remember his wonderful smile.

It makes sense that such a great man, lived such a great life.

I am sad he is no longer here.

A candle for Dr E, who made the world a brighter place.

Dr. Errante was my children's pediatrician until they grew into young adults. He was always so caring, patient & able to put them and myself at complete ease. My son still remembers the cracked bike helmet with the imbeded rocks & hardware that he kept in one of the exam rooms to remind the kids (and parents) of the importance of wearing one when riding. We are saddened to hear of his passing & will remember him fondly. Our thoughts & sympathy go out to Lois & his family at this time.

I first met Dr. Errante when I joined the Pediatric staff at Marin Medical Group in Terra Linda I have fond memories of those years working with Dr. Kent, Dr. Errante and Dr. Monteverdi (before Dr M left the practice). Lois Young was the office manager (later to become Mrs. Errante). Dolores Bondanza and I were the newbies. It was a very good group, who worked well together and became lasting friends.
Dr E. could always be counted on to accept Medical patients, group home children, and boys from St. Vincent's School. He was always there for those who needed him. It seems very fitting to me that his memorial service is to be held at St Vincent's Boys School.
He was a very special person and I will never forget him. Margie Laviletta

How sad to have learned of Don's recent passing. Don and I were pediatric residents together for three years in the Bronx. Arien and our daughter Susan were born within days of each other and we shared baby sitting since both Eleanor and my wife Mathy worked as nurses part time. While Don was stationed in Italy with the Navy I was stationed in France with the Army. We visited him in Livorno on our way to Rome. We picked up the friendship when we returned. They visited us in NYC and we visited Lois and Don on Larkspur as well. They initiated us into the joys of a redwood hot tub while we were there. Inspired by the experience we bought one for our home a few years later. Though we will miss the exchange of Christmas greetings the life time of memories will continue. Andy Mezey

What a caring man. Not only did he take fantastic care of his patients, but he took the time to watch over me, a then young staff member, too! He was a father-figure, friend, inspiration and trusted confidant. His compassion and perspective will continue to influence my life. And I will continue to smile as I remember him sitting in his office, loving his life, his wife, his family, his patients, his friends, his cycling, his travel adventures. The world is a better place because of him.

Dr. Errante was my children's pediatrician at Mt Zion Hospital. He was the most caring doctor. We had several sons with who had physical problems and he devoted time helping them.
