Donald Happ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2025.
Donald George Happ passed away on February 9, 2025, in Rochester, New York, at the age of 93. Born on November 25, 1931, in Rochester, he spent his life deeply rooted in the community where he was born and where he ultimately returned.

Donald began his working life at the Powers Hotel and later at Bond Bakery, both located in Rochester. He eventually joined Xerox Corporation, where he worked for 18 years before retiring at the age of 55. His professional journey reflected a strong work ethic and a commitment to providing for those around him.

His early adult years were marked by military service. Donald initially enlisted in the Navy but was honorably discharged after 50 days due to scar tissue on his heart from childhood. Undeterred, he joined the Army, often joking that "they take anyone!" It was during his time in the Army that he met his first wife, Susan (Hsu, Pao-Kuei) Happ. They were married in Taiwan in 1958 and shared 26 years together before her passing.

Later in life, Donald found love again with Velma Ann (Troiano) Happ. They moved to St. Petersburg, Florida and enjoyed retirement life together. Their marriage lasted 32 years until her passing. Throughout his life, Donald remained devoted to family and faith.

He is survived by his daughter Linda Murray; son James McConnell and his wife Debbie; step-son Roger Nasatka and his wife Janice; grandson Ryan Murray; granddaughter Mallorie Evans and her husband Shawn; great-grandchildren Aden Murray, Keira Evans, Rylen Murray, Christopher Murray, and Joseph Murray; Velma's children and grandchildren, as well as niece Barbara Harrison and husband Terry; grandnieces Tiffany Zimney and husband David and Shannon Meckfessel and husband Michael; who held a special place in his heart.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, George Washington Happ and Evelyn Alda Happ; his brother Paul Eugene Happ; and both of his beloved wives.

Faith played an important role throughout Donald's life. As a child, he attended Church of the Master on Lake Avenue in Rochester with his family. In later years, he became an active member of Rivera Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, where he served faithfully as an usher for many years.

A man of deep values and community involvement, Donald was also a Shriner, Knight Templar, and Mason-affiliations that reflected his dedication to service and fellowship.

He spent his final years at the Wegman's Cottages at Park Ridge Living Center, where he received excellent care and truly loved his time there.

Donald's legacy lives on through the generations of family who knew him as father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle-and through those whose lives were touched by his presence. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be at Orchard Community Church 2285 Latta Road, Greece, NY.
