Donald Vought Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 15 to Jun. 17, 2013.
Vought, Donald R.

Donald Ralph Vought, 63, of Fremont, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, in his home. Born July 20, 1949 in Neenah, Don was the son of Ralph Vought and Mary Pettingill Johnson and stepson of Harold E. Johnson. Don attended Neenah High School and served in the United States Army. He was the completely enamored husband of Anne K. Des Marais and goofy and adoring father to his children Lucas, Nina, Emily, and Mari. Always happiest outdoors, he helped to build the Nordic Mountain ski resort in Mt. Morris and worked there among treasured friends for decades. He spent many days on his beloved Lake Poygan and tending the land and home he and Anne bought more than thirty years ago. He loved hunting, fishing, the Green Bay Packers and sports in general, Star Trek and Saturday Night Live, Bob Dylan and all sorts of groovy tunes, and many pets he claimed to hate. Donny was both rebel and romantic, with a signature style of mischief and humor but also a profound loyalty and abundant affection for those he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, and children, Lucas D. Vought (Katie Matthews) of Arcata, California; Nina K. Vought (Dion Block) of Menasha; Emily S. Vought of San Francisco; and Margaret K. Vought of San Diego. He leaves his sisters, Christine Vought of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Judith Vought of Menasha; Patricia Vought of Oshkosh; and Kathryn Vought (Todd Wittmann) of Neenah and his brother Thomas Vought of Oshkosh as well as nieces and nephews who adored him and close friends who stuck by him through thick and thin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Sue; and his brother, Bobby.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home. A reception for friends and family will be held from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service. Memorials in his name may be sent to the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, W7303 County Road CS, Poynette, WI 53955.

To the Vought Family

I was sad to hear of Donny's passing. I did not know him as well as I know Chris. May you remember all the fun times you had with him. The Whole Vought Family is in my prayers.

Chris, I think of you so often and wonder how you are doing. I hope you are well.

5 Mile Quarry, Chain of Lakes and fishing in Saxeville. Not bad ways to spend the summer. Yup, all good. My condolences to Donny's entire family.

Way back in Washington grade school I would always hide from Don. I was hopelessly in love with his sister Judy and Don told me he would beat me up if I went near her. I did anyway and he didn`t really care. I saw Don years later many times on Lake Poygan. He loved the outdoors and knew how to have fun doing it.

I'm an ex of a niece of Donny's. He and I never had much in common, but he saw that I treated his niece well, and that was good enough for him. He was always kind and generous to me. Rest in peace, and condolences to his family, who will surely miss him.

When Donny was about 6 years old and I about 4.5 years old, we skipped out of Sunday School and went to the big church balcony at 1st Presbyterian in Neenah. A very charming older woman (at least at that time I thought older) looked down at us and said "Oh, how cute! Are you twins?" Without missing a beat Donny looked at me then back at her and back at me and said "Her? I don't even know her." I cried. He giggled. Neither one of us ever needed a" weatherman to know which way the wind blows."
Donny is gone now. I will lock eyes with him forever, knowing the certain and uncertain history we shared. I loved my big brother.
