I am so shocked and filled with sorrow at the passing of Donny. Donny was a faithful supporter of my non-profit for seniors and disabled. We were to make contact that week to talk about the store closing and our annual donation. It was difficult enough to imagine our neighbourhood without Nettleship's but no one can wrap their minds around our community without our friend Donny. My last conversation with him was about his retirement. Please accept my sincere condolences, Donny will be so missed by so many. Vickie Rennie

Donny was a special man. A true neighbour, always ready to lend a helping hand whether clearing neighbourhood sidewalks of snow or keeping an extra set of house keys in store for those times when you got locked out. He will be missed.

Although it has been a very long time since I have seen the Taggart family, they (and Donny, by association) were fixtures of my childhood and adolescence growing up in Cabbagetown. The entire family were such neighbourhood anchors, with Nettleship's as the beating heart of Parliament Street. Both of my brothers and I played baseball with all the Taggart kids, whether in community tournaments or regular season ball. Donny was always a kind, funny, true blue guy. I cannot believe he is gone from amongst us so soon. My condolences to the entire Taggart family and all of those for whom I am sure Donny's passing will leave a big hole.

Stephanie and the Taggart family, so sorry for your loss. Still processing the news and it's hard.
I have known Donny for over 40 years, from the early years of Woodland Park where even though there were 85 cottages, we were all family and grew up together to the time of playing hockey for the legion and the fun we all had on the bus road trips to tournaments. You always had a smile and had the fantastic gift of retaining jokes and telling stories that always made people laugh and smile.
Donny had the great skill of making people feel good and important. He would always shake my hand and ask how life was. He was a kind heart and a gentleman and will truly be missed.

April 27, 2017

Stephanie, Chrissy and family.

We are deeply saddened for your loss.

Donny's hurried swagger and big smile came through our front doors several times a day to grab a quick bite between customers. As busy as he was, he always had time to say hello, inquire about our lives or tell a cute story.

Donny was a joy to have around. He was one of the sweetest, most giving and generous men we've had the pleasure to know. We miss him so much already.

I grew up with Donny @ Woodland park and had Cathie on the back of my old triumph at least once. Don was a great young man and grew up to help everyone he could. When our daughter moved into the area and needed a few items from the store he sharpened his pencil to help her out. A few times when i was in the area on a firetruck or Chiefs car I stopped in to say hello. Prayers for all of his family may he rest in Peace...ol pal Al Harris

Dearest Stephanie and Friends of Don's,

I first met Don shortly after I moved to Toronto. A group of us girls had rented an apartment on Wellesley street.... and I set out to get a part-time job while I attended school. Stephanie had just moved in too and was starting a new life, away from her parent's home. I ended up working as a cashier in a little pharmacy across the street from the hardware store. Well, Don came in one day, looking like a man on a mission -- all sweaty, busy and in a hurry, needing to buy a package of cigarettes and some other odds and ends. We became friends from that day forward. He was smart -- and soooooo funny. Kindhearted. A big fan of sports. Dedicated to the store and to his family -- he often spoke lovingly of his Mother and Chrissy. Eventually, I'd end up seeing him everyday for something or other. Soon, I got to know him, and invited him to meet my friend Stephanie over some very badly home-cooked meals.

They fell in love and eventually married.

He will be sorely missed. I miss him already.

Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Stephanie and Donny's families -- the one into which he was born and the one he and Stephanie made. In our two decades in Cabbagetown, the Taggarts and Nettleship's have been a part of our lives -- the helpful advice, the suggestions of odd colours for paint, and the many, many kindnesses. When people talk about the friendliness of Cabbagetowners, they're talking about Donny, his wonderful mother, Marg, and everyone who worked at or through Nettleship's for so many years.

During the past two decades, I shared many a laugh with Donny when I visited Nettleships looking for some obscure piece of hardware or, alternatively, a gallon of paint. Donny was always helpful, engaging, and generous with his advice. Donny and his mother, who passed away in July 2016, were part of the history of the neighbourhood. They kept alive that "small town feeling" when shopkeepers were both neighbours and friends of their customers. Donny will be sadly missed by the people who had the good fortune to have known him. - Doug Cunningham

April 25, 2017

Me and my family have known Donny for 24 years. He was the best human being out there. Always willing to help you in any way he can. When i bought my house in East York, he came and change the locks for free and gave me paint among other items. Often he let me stay at his cottage and would not take any compensation. I see him often and he always crack a joke or two. I will miss him so much, but will always remember the good times we had, especially the BBQ at my backyard. RIP Donny. You were a great man to everyone who came your way. I will never forget the favours you did for me. I feel like i have lost my father. RIP and god bless. Love Moe, Roshnie, Cassandra and Devynn. Thanks for the good times.
