Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers go out in your behalf, Paul, and for your entire family, on the death of your sister, Dorothy!
What precious tributes her students have shared about Dorothy here.
May God comfort all of you! We too have many precious memories of Dorothy and your entire family, as Margaret played at our Wedding in Our Saviour's in 1959, and your Dad was our Pastor.
What wonderful memories! May God bless you always!

I moved to Minnetonka in my fourth grade year and was so fortunate to have Miss Birkeland as my music teacher. What vivid memories I have of her teaching us to breathe from our diaphragm and of the many songs she taught us. I often find myself singing them to myself even now, more than 40 years later. When I see a rainbow in the sky, I will sing "I Can Sing a Rainbow" and think of Miss Birkeland and the love of music she so enthusiastically shared.

I remember Dorothy Birkeland especially in her role as an encouraging, enthusiastic junior counselor for my freshman corridor at St. Olaf College back in 1957. She was certainly an inspiring role model for me then. Recently, I've sung in a choir directed by her niece, Sara Birkeland, and have realized how both Dorothy and her late sister, Margaret, have passed on their musical talent and inspiring leadership to a younger generation. My deep sympathy to her surviving family members.

Dorothy was a very special music educator whom I had the good fortune of meeting, as I took on a role that initially demanded expertise in multiple arts areas. Dorothy, along with several other vocal music colleagues, helped me "grow" into the job. Dorothy was highly respected by her teaching colleagues and mentored many new and aspiring music educators, as well as many of us who had leadership responsibilities. Her expertise and willingness to share resources and ideas with fellow music educators was an inspiration to us all. Her work with children was exemplary providing quality instruction and performances that had polish and pizzaz. I will always remember Dorothy for her gracious demeanor, rye sense of humor, beautiful, welcoming smile, and her unfaltering commitment to music, family and friends. Thank you for your gift of music and support, Dorothy.

Dorothy was one of my junior counselors when I was a freshman at St. Olaf. She helped all of us start our college years well. My heart goes out to her family.

Miss Birkeland was my music teacher throughout elementary school in Hopkins. She never failed to inspire students and I excelled (musically) under her tutelage. I will never forget recording the Charlie Brown album in sixth grade (I still have it!), or learning the song Fifty Nifty United States. Miss Birkeland was partially responsible for encouraging me to take harp lessons. Her enthusiasm was relentless.
Dear Miss Birkeland, here's wishing you safe passage as you begin your next journey. You touched so many lives, including mine.
