Dorothy CHAMBERS Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Sep. 18 to Sep. 21, 2015.
CHAMBERS, Dorothy (nee Jane)
1928 - 2015
Our dear mother Dorothy left us peacefully on September 10, 2015 to be reunited with her beloved Oswald. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 25 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew's- Wesley United Church, 1012 Nelson Street at Burrard, in Vancouver, BC. Born in Callington, Cornwall, England, Miss Jane grew up during the war expecting to enroll in military service. With peace came a change of plans and she became a teacher, attending Stockwell College, Bromley. Adventurous in spirit, she travelled with her sister, Margaret, and friends in Europe and took a Fulbright teacher exchange to New Jersey in 1952. She pursued a 30 year career teaching in several Cornwall schools, and finally in St. Neot primary school after she married Oswald and moved to Colliford on Bodmin Moor. In 1976, they moved briefly to Treffry Farm near Landhydrock and in 1978, they moved to Canada, living in Summerland, Chase Creek, and Vancouver. Active in politics in her youth, Dorothy was also a cherished member of several United Church congregations, and took her church lay ministry on with aplomb, driving two hours round-trip many Sundays to serve her congregation in Celista. Her understated yet strong and unwavering faith in God sustained her throughout her life. She delighted in her family and being in touch, taking up the computer and email at 70, lamenting those that weren't online yet. She is dearly missed by Robert (Christine), grandson Richard, and Susan (Jeffrey), and many friends and extended family in England. Memorial donations may be made to First United Church Community Ministry Society or St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church.

I knew Dorothy from Trinity United Church in Kitsilano. Such a lovely, lovely woman. I remember telling her I was one of the few people I knew who liked Cornish pasties and she brought me a home made one the very next week! She often had something interesting to share with the church community. I was surprised to hear of her passing - brings a lump to my throat.

Dear Susan and family,
I am so sorry for your loss and I will miss your beloved mother Dorothy very much. We spent many pleasant times together at her favorite bench overlooking English Bay. We had very enjoyable conversations over the years and she was always very appreciative of the music that I played with my friends at that location. I always found her to be a fine person and a gracious lady and she will be missed. Here is a short clip from last year with Dorothy close by as usual.

I will always remember Dorothy's lovely smile and sense of humour when she came weekly to my fitness class. She also enjoyed bringing stamps and envelopes to my husband, Bob, a stamp collector since childhood. We will both miss her very much.
