DOROTHY GIOVANAZZI Obituary

GIOVANAZZI
DOROTHY K.
Peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2012, 89 years young. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Albert Giovanazzi; loving mother of Donna, Dee-Dee, Annette, Doreen (Les) Yoest, Dina (David) Fisfis; cherished and fun-loving Nan of Caralin Fohl, Allison and Andrea Yoest, Nicholas, Albert and Katherine Fisfis; sister-in-law of Charles and Donna Connors, Ferd Lowry and Ed Rutledge; daughter of the late Norman J. Connors and Katherine Mungall Connors. Dorothy also was preceded in death by siblings, Florence Gunn, Ethel Lowry, Mary Rutledge, Norman Connors and Janet Connors and sister-in-law, to Margaret and Mike Sparano; dear aunt to nieces and nephews and a loyal friend to many. Dorothy believed in the power of prayer and said at least eight rosaries daily. She often prayed for others and many times her prayers were answered. Dorothy was a lifelong member of Risen Lord Parish (formerly St. Francis Xavier). She was the first woman elected to the Parish Council, organized the parish festival for many years and was chairperson of the church bingo for 18 years. She was past president of Brighton Heights Athletic Association Women's' Auxiliary, and volunteered at Vincentian Home, Mercy Providence Hospital and, until recently, Little Sisters of the Poor. Dorothy enjoyed driving her friends to Mass on Sunday and to play bingo. She loved playing board games with her family, cards with her grandchildren and the slot machines at the casino. Dorothy loved St. Patrick's Day and in her last hours was singing Irish limericks. She lived life to the fullest and was a wonderful role model. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at O'BRIEN'S, 3724 California at Cooper Aves., North Side. Mass of Christian Burial in Risen Lord Church, Friday 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Institute, 8235 Ohio River Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15202.

I just read through all these messages and what a tribute they are to her loving, giving spirit. Norman, how wonderful that she had you write from the "Pittsburgh" book and took you on those Sunday visits -- those two acts symbolize what she stood for: deeply involved with family and mindful of her and our history. So many of us cousins lost our mothers too soon, and Dorothy, the oldest and longest-lived, was always there to help fill the gap. She overcame many physical challenges to reach 89, but she had one great advantage: Thanks for never smoking, Aunt Dot.

Aunt Dot will be remembered as one of the most influential people not only in our family, but in the community. I have many fond memories growing up of spending time at Aunt Dot and Uncle Al's, along with accompanying them on Sunday visits to family (including many close calls driving through Etna with Aunt Dot's neckbrace on). She taught me the value of thinking about what I said before I said it (and did this through making me write pages from the 1970's "Pittsburgh" book when I was out of line). She will be sorely missed.

To the Gionavazzi Famiy,

Aunt Dot was the Matriarch. She was a very special aunt to all her nieces and nephews. She was such an unselfish person. I believe she was a living Saint as my mom would agree. I want to thank her for being such an important person in my life and my family. Oh, the fun we had with her in our lives. Lake Erie trips, campfires, and chicken dances. Aunt Dot was the queen of chicken dance. We were truely blessed to have her. God Bless you at this difficult time. May all the great memories remain in your hearts forever.

Mrs. G as I knew her, was one of the sweetest and hippest people I had the pleasure of knowing. She passed her wisdom on to not only her wonderful family but all of us who considered her as a mother to us. Although we will miss her dearly...we can take great pleasure in knowing we have all gained another angel watching over us. AND despite the age discrepancy she and I had one HUGE thing in common....REESE'S PEANUT BUTTER CUPS!! Love you misses G..Rest In Peace.

My Nan was the best Grandmother, Mother, Aunt, Cousin, Sister, and friend anyone could ask for. She inspires me to be a better person every single day. I'm going to miss all the stories she used to tell, always beating Aunt Donna at Texas Hold 'Em, and her never having her teeth in. Holidays just won't be the same without her. She was a wonderful person and I will never forget her. I love you Nan, you'll always mean more than the world to me. This isn't a goodbye, only a see you later. Say hey to Pap for me.

It was an honor to have known Dorothy (Nan) and spend time with her. She was a very bright and witty person. I loved to hear her stories. I got to play cards with her a couple times while she was in Clover visiting her daughter Doreen. She has 5 wonderful daughters that will miss her dearly along with so many other family memebers and friends. Rest in peace Nan.
