Dorothy Eileen Schramek

Dorothy Eileen Preston Schramek passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, embraced by the love of her family and the memories she cherished. Born on July 23, 1932, in Seattle, Washington, Dorothy grew up in Quilcene, Washington, surrounded by strong family ties that shaped her sense of belonging. She attended Washington State University, earning a degree in Home Economics, reflecting her love for creating warm and inviting spaces. After graduation, she worked as a kindergarten teacher's assistant before beginning a career as an interior designer in Port Angeles. Her passion for design and antiques remained a constant throughout her life.

Her journey took shape when she met Robert Schramek, a young forester whose work with the U.S. Forest Service led them on many adventures together. They married in 1955 at Quilcene First Presbyterian Church, beginning a life of exploration, moving ten times throughout their marriage. With each transition, Dorothy wholeheartedly welcomed new surroundings, weaving herself into the fabric of every community and cherishing the friendships she made along the way.

In retirement, Dorothy and Robert returned to Port Townsend to be near family, settling into the beloved Olympic Peninsula where their roots ran deep. For thirty years, they made Port Townsend their home, actively engaging in the community and as members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Their faith and friendships enriched their lives and strengthened their sense of connection.

Dorothy continued her lifelong tradition of welcoming others-whether through heartfelt conversations, volunteer work, or the simple gesture of sharing tea and cookies with friends and family. She generously gave her time to hospital foundations, craft guilds, and the Children's Hospital gift shop in Port Townsend, Washington. One of her greatest joys was working as a buyer for the University of Oregon Natural History Museum gift shop, where she delighted in meeting artists and historians who deepened her appreciation for the museum's mission. She found happiness in the everyday moments-tending her garden, baking for loved ones, and sharing treasured recipes and stories.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert (2019), her parents, William and Joan Preston, and her sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Robert Allgire. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Mellaine Shade (Doug Shade), Joan Davenport (Emery Davenport), and Elizabeth Schramek (Larry Soghoian), who carry forward her love and wisdom. Her legacy also lives on through her five grandchildren-James Davenport, Phillip Davenport, Alan Shade, Brian Shade, and Danielle Soghoian-and her four great-grandchildren, William and Robert Davenport, Mara Shade, and Arthur Davenport.

A joyous memorial celebration will be held at Quilcene First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 7th, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a gathering inside the church for tea and cookies, where attendees are invited to share favorite recipes in honor of Dorothy's warmth and generosity. A simple burial will follow at Quilcene Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Quilcene Historical Museum in Dorothy's honor, supporting the preservation of the local history she cherished.
