Dorothy Simon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2025.
Yonkers - Dorothy Lee Simon passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025. She was 92 years old. Dorothy was born in New York City in 1932 to Solen and Mathilde Burry née Rothgans. The daughter of an actor and an editor, respectively, Dorothy grew up entrenched in New York City's theatre and arts community and attended Hunter College High School, graduating in 1951. Dorothy married violinist and conductor Louis F. Simon in 1953, with whom she had three daughters, Michelle, Nadina and Louise. Dorothy and Louis filled their Yonkers home with eclectic art from around the world and always an interesting pet or two. Dorothy pursued her higher education in the 1970s, ultimately earning an MA in Art History from Lehman College in 1977. Harnessing a lifelong passion for fine art, Dorothy worked as an art curator and librarian at New York University until her retirement in 2005. At leisure, Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed attending the theatre, viewing the latest museum exhibits, and watching films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She loved classical, swing and ballroom music and, until her last days, was a daily reader of the New York Times. Dorothy cultivated an interest in writing in her later years, chronicling many stories from her childhood and her imagination. Memories of Dorothy's humor and intellect will remain with all those who knew her in life. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Louis but leaves behind her three daughters, Michelle (Richard), Nadina (Michael) and Louise (Christian); her six grandchildren, Amanda (Gabriela), Maggie (Eoin), Bobby (Christie), Simon, Lucas and Benjamin; her three great-grandchildren, Frances, Martin and Rory; and her brother Anthony (Veena).
