Douglas Bewick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 30, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012.
Douglas W. Bewick 1925 - 2011 LONGMEADOW, MA Douglas W. Bewick, 86, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Tuesday, December 27th. He was born on August 10th, 1925 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, a son of the late Leslie and Eleanor (Cline) Bewick. Doug was a graduate of St. John High School, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, graduated from the LeLand Powers School of Radio and Dramatics in Boston, MA and the Hollywood Bowl Academy of Theater Arts in Hollywood, CA. After becoming a US citizen, Doug worked as a theater director and producer in Hollywood, CA before returning to Springfield, MA where he was a staff radio announcer for WSPR. He began a long and successful career in advertising when he joined the Travelers Insurance Company as an advertising executive in 1955. Doug founded his own independent advertising agency, Douglas Bewick Advertising, in 1967. He retired in 1989 after the highly acclaimed agency was purchased by Monster.com. Doug was a member of the Longmeadow Country Club and the Ha'Penny Bay Beach Club in St Croix in the US Virgins Islands where he spent the last thirty winters enjoying the camaraderie of his many friends in the Reef community. He was an avid golfer who claimed to have never had a bad round, but was quick to add that he still had never perfected his swing. His many friends and sons-in-law can attest to the fact that, somehow, he was always on the green first. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Anita (Bunny) Bewick, three daughters, Laura Brines and her husband Duncan of Waitsfield, VT, Candace Luthy and her husband Peter of London, UK and Heather Dwight and her husband John of Charlotte, VT. In addition to his eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and eleven nieces and nephews, Doug leaves a brother, John Bewick of St. John, New Brunswick, a sister Peggy (Bewick) Dimmitt of West Hartford, CT, Ann (Bewick) Fullerton Butler of Melbourne, FL and a multitude of friends. He will be remembered forever for the fact that he always made an effort to ensure that he left everyone he touched just a little bit happier. There will be a service to celebrate Doug's life at the First Church of Christ, 763 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow, MA on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a contribution to a charity of your choice.

Dear Bunny, we heard from Sue Warner about Doug. Ed is in the 'Memory impaired' Unit here at Bentley Village, aka the Alzheimer residence.Increasingly, he cannot remember most things, but lifetime friendships still linger in his psyche. So I know he would join me in sending our deepest sympathy to you and your girls. Doug was a very special person who enriched all our lives with his wit, his kindness, his joy in life. So sad to think he wasn't able to enjoy the benefits of a new knee. Our love to you all,
Jani Clark

Doug was my boss for eight years at Bewick Advertising and Park West Advertising. Everyone admired Doug and most of us revered him. He was gentility itself – honorable, refined, courteous and kind. As many will attest, Doug was fun with a capital F. He was a fine and unique man whom I was proud to know. My deepest sympathy goes to Bunny and the Bewick family.

Doug was my boss at Bewick Advertising in the mid - late 1970's. Doug was a wonderful family man, with photos of Bunny and the girls all over the walls of his office. The agency had the same family feel. My deepest sympathy to Bunny and his family.

We will miss his ever-ready smile and being one of the best, sincerest hosts we have known. We loved having you both travel with us, especially to Canada, his birthplace and a place he would always call home. "Bunny" be as strong as he would expect you to be for you always were "a team." Good cheer and sincerity was your collective forte.

With great fondness, Chuck and Irene Hayward
