Douglas “Doug” Herda Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2025.
Douglas "Doug" Herda, 79, of Torrance, California, passed away suddenly on August 4, 2025, due to complications related to his history of Parkinson's disease. He was born on February 8, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Ralph and Marge Herda.

Doug lived life with energy and passion. Restless by nature, he poured himself fully into everything he did. During one summer break after leaving Hewlett-Packard (HP), he built two backyard decks. Doug took flying lessons and loved the feeling of flight, a joy that reflected his love of adventure.

Doug loved music, playing guitar and ukulele, singing, and dancing. In college, he performed in church variety shows. He also enjoyed basketball and playing the card game Sheepshead with friends.

Travel was one of his greatest passions. Doug believed that by learning about different cultures, people could better understand one another and see how much we all share in common. His adventures took him to Machu Picchu, Turkey, China, India, Egypt, Israel, and many other historic and awe-inspiring places.

Doug was a lifelong learner. He was a math/philosophy major, and his bookcases were filled with books on spirituality and philosophy. Doug was on a spiritual journey his entire life. After retiring, Doug picked up new hobbies like playing the ukulele and pickleball, he joined Omnilore (a lifelong learning group), took acting classes and performed in a play, biked along the strand, kayaked, and started line dancing twice a week.

Family was Doug's greatest passion. He loved being married and being a father. Summers were filled with camping trips, family adventures to NASA Space Camp, Disneyland and Disney World, Yellowstone, Hawaii, and visits to Wisconsin and Seattle. His daughters inherited his curiosity and love of travel, something he was especially proud of.

Doug's career reflected his curiosity and strong work ethic. He studied for the priesthood before attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he also played some college football. He worked a variety of jobs, including as a garbage collector during college, which he spoke of fondly, before moving into the world of computers. Doug worked in sales and programming at Burroughs, then built a long career at Hewlett-Packard where he spent 23 years before transitioning into aerospace at Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. While working at Lockheed-Martin, he studied to get his Master's degree in computer Systems Engineering at San Jose State University.

Although Doug was naturally an introvert, once he felt comfortable, he was lively, humorous, and deeply engaging. His adventurous spirit, his blue eyes that lit up in conversation, and his ability to make people feel happy in his presence will be remembered by all who knew him.

Doug had many proud accomplishments. He had a strong work ethic and found success in his career at both Hewlett-Packard and in the aerospace industry. But more than professional success, what Doug was most proud of was his family. As restless as he was by nature, he settled down once he was married and had children. He found true joy in being a husband and a father, and he was happiest being a "family man".

Doug is survived by his wife Rosemary, his daughter Stacie, siblings Gordy (Connie) Herda, Mary (Jim) Howitt, Maggie (George) Rische, and Ed (Deb) Herda; his sister-in-law Gail Herda, wife of his late brother Ken Herda; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Marge Herda, his brother Ken, and his beloved daughter Courtney.

Doug would want to be remembered as a kind soul, a loyal friend, and a family man. He was admired and loved by many, and his passing leaves a brightness missing in the lives of all who knew him.

A private graveside service will be held in Wisconsin at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in Doug's name.

Doug, you have had your adventures and traveled many miles. Now, as you join your beloved daughter Courtney, it is your time to rest in peace.

Thank you for these memories of Doug, and I will cherish them forever. We were together 40 years --half of his lifetime, and as I read these tributes, it brings up many stories that I had completely forgotten about. What has touched me deeply are the new stories where I get to learn even more about this kind, gentle, amazing man. Doug was very blessed. I am very grateful for your comments. Thank you and love, Rosie

I have so many fun memories of Doug--he had so many varied interests, and was always up for a parade or celebration. We played ukulele and sang together and shared our love of Indian food and wine. Woodies on the wharf or walking on the beach, line dancing or hiking, baseball....wait, are they dodger fans?:). He traveled to places most of us are afraid to go to. I think of Doug every time I sit at my kitchen table and see the beautiful kintsugi repair he did for me on my custom made wooden table. Who knew owning a furniture store was one of his past ventures? Doug was multifaceted, he was fearless and courageous and lived life to the fullest.

I've been blessed to have known Doug and his family for over 30 years, with so many fond memories over that time.

While it's heartbreaking and surreal to no longer be able to speak or text with you, I take comfort in believing you are now at peace.

Doug's life force helped support and inspire many. His outgoing adventurous spirit allowed us to share; tennis, white water rafting, spelunking, sky diving, camping, jet pilot simulation, and so much more. He had a warm welcoming presence that bonded family and friends over meals, energized our Ol Guys support group, and helped to weather heart wrenching times too.

I am immensely grateful for our time together, and the lessons learned from his example as a "trailblazing ironman."

Doug's connection to everyone he held close to his heart, will continue forever when we remember this truly beautiful person.

Here's to you my friend

Doug was someone who truly lived life. There was an adventurous spirit about him-one that couldn´t be contained or quieted. When I learned he was going bungee jumping, Dennis and I just fell off our chairs in disbelief. That was Doug-always up for the thrill, the challenge, the story worth telling.

One of my fondest memories is the time he took Stacie Coutmey and me white water rafting. He patiently showed us how to paddle and what to do if (or when!) we fell in. It was exhilarating, hilarious, and completely unforgettable-just like him.

The Herda family became our extended family over time. We shared countless meals and evenings together, with dinners exchanged often and stories always flowing. Whenever we were invited over, I´d always ask what kind of wine Doug would enjoy. It was important to me because he mattered.

Doug had this amazing way of elevating any conversation. I could bring up any topic, and somehow he would always share something I didn´t know. He taught through stories, through laughter, through presence. He made people feel curious, welcome, and alive.

These are the memories I carry with me-the joy, the laughter, and wine. Doug lived fully, loved deeply, and left a mark on all of us who were lucky enough to know him.

Dear friends, I wanted to share this, it is Doug´s favorite wall hanging. It has survived many moves, is a bit raggedy and has been on his wall forever!

It´s a little hard to read but this is what is says:

Life is not a race ~ but indeed a journey. Be honest. Work hard. Be choosy. Say "thank you", "I love you", and "great job" to someone each day. Go to church, take time for prayer. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. Let your handshake mean more than pen and paper. Love your life and what you've been given, it is not accidental ~ search for your purpose and do it as best you can. Dreaming does matter. It allows you to become that which you aspire to be. Laugh often. Appreciate the little things in life and enjoy them. Some of the best things really are free. Do not worry, less wrinkles are more becoming. Forgive, it frees the soul. Take time for yourself ~ plan for longevity. Recognize the special people you've been blessed to know. Live for today, enjoy the moment. ~ Bonnie Mohr.

Doug, you are forever in my heart until we meet again. Love, your Rosie
