Douglas Hardman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2024.
Douglas "Doug" Martin Hardman, 66, of Riverside, CA, died on August 27th, 2024, at his home. He was born on February 24, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio. Doug graduated from Collinwood High School in 1976 and went on to earn his Bachelors degree from Hiram College in 1980, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 1982.

Doug spent much of his career with the prestigious worldwide management consulting firm of Booz Allen Hamilton. At Booz, he specialized in Supply Chain Management within the Operations Practice where he was considered an industry expert. Senior management of Fortune 500 companies sought his advice and guidance throughout his career. For several years, Doug was head of the Operations Practice, serving clients across the world from offices in Cleveland, London, Chicago and San Francisco.

Doug was a loving father, who savored the time he spent with his family. In 1988, his daughter Katherine "Kathy" was born, and Doug raised her with former spouse Michele Hardman (née Ward, d. 2017). He loved to travel, and was able to visit many wonderful places throughout his life. Christmastime was his favorite part of the year but baseball was his favorite season. Doug was overjoyed to see Cleveland baseball's return to the playoffs during his lifetime, and enjoyed the Giants' success during his time in San Francisco. He remained a devoted alumnus of Hiram, serving as a trustee for twelve years, receiving the Alumni Achievement Award in 2015, and being inducted into the Garfield Society in 2021.

In 2019, he moved to Riverside, CA, to be near his daughter Kathy and his grandsons, Oliver (b. 2019) and Felix (b. 2021), whom he adored. Visiting "Grandpa's compartment" was a highlight for his family throughout the pandemic. In 2022 he joined the residential community at Citrus Place, and became the president of the Resident's Council. He was an enthusiastic participant in community activities, while remaining a reliable babysitting-helper, and an all-round involved and devoted father and grandfather. Doug will be sorely missed, especially at family dinners. His passion for holiday celebrations, board games, and baseball will be passed on.

He is survived by his daughter Katherine "Kathy" Hardun (née Hardman) and her spouse Danny (né Dunn), his grandsons Oliver and Felix Hardun, his sister Nancy Wethington (née Schedl) and her spouse Steve, niece Natalie Schwartz and her partner Andy Graves, niece Stephanie Ruebusch (née Wethington) and her spouse Sam, niece Madison Liber (née Wethington) and her spouse Austin, and grand-niece Arlie Graves, as well as his beloved cousins and their children. He was preceded in death by his mother, Armetta Schedl (née Hardman), and his aunts and uncles.

I remember a Christmas party at Kathy's place in the park. She always throws the best parties. I sat at the dining table to decorate cookies or make gingerbread houses, not sure which. Doug was sitting next to me, and we had one of the most insightful, thought-provoking conversations. Loved how he laughed and smiled freely. He was such an authentic person that you couldn't help but be authentic around him.

His love and pride for his daughter, Kathy, was so evident, and he was an engaged and present grandfather for Oliver and Felix. Seeing them all together filled my heart with joy. I remember back when Kathy and I laughed at her terrible dating app stories. Then she met Danny and lived happily ever after, and Doug loved every minute of it.

Doug, it was lovely knowing you.

Most sincerely,
Robin Ohlinger

When I first met Doug through Kathy, I was delighted by his engaging, infectious smile and his friendly warmth. I was always pleased to either know he'd be at an event or see him there. He was the judge of the carved pumpkins at Kathy and Danny's Halloween party once and blindly picked mine. He made it feel like such a fine honor. He was fabulous with the details, the little moments that make a life special. He will be missed for all he added to the lives of others and so much more.
