Douglas Horie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2025.
Douglas passed away on July 2, 2025 in Redding, CA. He was 65 years old. Doug resided in Anderson, CA for the last 20 years. There will be a Celebration of Life on August 24, 2025 at the Shasta State Historic Park at 15312 CA-299, Shasta, CA 96087 at 1pm.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, Dr. William "Skip" James Horie, his mother Vergene Elizabeth Horie, and sister Nancijo Elizabeth Dixon. He is survived and cherished by his wife of 36 years, Bennie Marlene Horie, daughter Teresa Marlene Barrett, son-in-law Christopher John Barrett, sisters Cynthia "Cindy" Jean Bradshaw, Kendra Beth Gilpatrick, Wendy Lee Canavan, and Jennifer "Jenny" Ann McClary, sisters-in-law Susan Lorene Miralles and Theresa Kay Ladewig, 17 nieces and nephews, and 28 great nieces and nephews.

Doug was born on August 25, 1959 in Pontiac, MI. His family moved several times before settling in Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY, one of Doug's favorite places. His first job was on a ferry selling ice cream. He went to college at Arizona State University, in another one of Doug's favorite places, Tempe, AZ. When he was 26, he went on a solo adventure in California with a plan to end up in Portland, OR. He never made it to Portland; He ended up in Redding, CA, where he met Bennie. They moved to Arizona shortly after and were married June 17, 1989.

Doug and Bennie owned and operated a moving company in Tempe, AZ for 19 years before relocating to Anderson, CA. Doug then worked for Redding Lumber Transport (RLT) as a Truck Driver for 18 years.

Doug loved reading, the outdoors, telling jokes, watching football and basketball, especially the ASU Sun Devils. He was a devoted husband and father, often visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Vancouver, WA whenever he travelled through for work. He was our gentle giant. He is so loved and will be deeply missed.

We were in awe and grateful for the love and generosity Doug & Bennie showed our daughter, Jessica Snow. They were second parents to her, and for that we are forever grateful and will always hold you in our hearts.

what a beautiful picture of Doug. He was a sweet man with a subtle but wickedly funny sense of humor. His life story was awesome, but I particularly like how he was distracted in Redding on his way to Washington. Then all plans changed, as well as his life. Rock on Doug! You were worth knowing.
