Dr. Douglas Howlett was my elementary school's principle. I remember asking him for a list of BBS (Bulletin Board System) phone numbers, which at the time in the very early 1990's was very hard to locate. He helped me get into writing software.

As a former student I find it so comforting to read the memorial to him and see what great accomplishments and full life Dr. Howlett led. When you are young in elementary school teachers are not like normal people. You cant always see passed the classroom into what they do when they leave the building. Its nice to know he had a loving family and friends that my family and I sent our warm sympathies and regards to. He was someone you respected in the halls and smiled with when he played guitar at our recitals. He made our school a place you were proud, even today, to say you attended. He'll fade off into that great big light but not in our memories.

Cherie and family,
I can't tell you how many times over the last few years I have thought of Doug. He had a quirky sense of humor but you knew where you stood with him. He was a man of interity. He was always supportive when someone was having family or personal issues. He demanded respect from students ,something which is greatly lacking now.
Please accept my condolences.

We were so saddened to hear of Dr. Howlett's passing. He was a man of principle and faith, and how he loved his girls! When a staff member was enduring a family problem, he gave much support in his quiet manner. Because of his dedication to education, the children of Brooklawn benefited greatly. He will be missed by many! Sincerely, Maureen (Brooklawn Staff Member) and Art Merz

A Sad Friend

April 12, 2010

As a prior student of Alice Costello School. I would like to express my sorrow for the loss of a great teacher and mentor. He was a great man with great values that he passed along to all of his students throughout his years at the school. He will be missed and sadly enough tomorrow's students lose out on his many fine qualities. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family and friends..

As I said to Dr. Howlett when he so suddenly retired from the Brooklawn School,...you are like the sunflower--so strong and sturdy, and yet in the wind and the storm, you remain standing despite all that could take you down. He obviously proved his strength through all that he went through to hold on to life and to live it to the fullest I will never forget this man, a teacher, a supervisor, and a friend. I am so sorry for your loss.

Our heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathy to Cheri and her beautiful family. You've always touched our lives in everything you say and do. You center your actions on our Savior, which sets you apart from all others. What a legacy Doug leaves for all of us. We see the beauty of his spirit that will live on forever in our hearts and memories. How blessed we are to have had the honor of having this beautiful man in our lives. We will not forget.
