Douglas Mixer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 28, 2025.
Douglas "Doug" Maxwell Mixer, 75, of Porter, M.E., passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H., surrounded by his family.

Doug was born on May 4, 1949 in Wolfeboro, N.H., the eldest of 4 children of the late John and Orilla (MacLean) Mixer. Growing up in Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro, Doug attended local schools, including a then-new Kingswood High School, and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1969. In his youth, Doug excelled at football, skiing, and baseball, where he was known for his lethal palmball. Growing up on Lake Winnipesaukee, Doug could often be found on the water, including in his mailboat.

After graduating from prep school, Doug briefly attended Nichols College before entering the workforce, spending the majority of his career in the toy industry. He spent time in both Maine and Massachusetts, working at Boston Baby, Child World, and most recently Toys R Us, from which he retired in 2006 as Store Director. After retirement, Doug spent time co-owning a sandwich shop in Rochester, N.H. and working as a transporter at Lakeview in Effingham, N.H.

In 1981, Doug married his wife Roxanna, and they eventually settled in Porter. Together they raised seven children and created countless memories. An avid fisherman, Doug spent many days fishing Winnipesaukee, West Grand Lake, Lobster Lake, Chesuncook, Aziscohos, and many other fishing holes in Maine and New Hampshire. Later in life, Doug was involved in the Porter town planning board, many town committees, Sacopee Valley athletics and football boosters, and enjoyed going on drives to places like Screw Auger Falls. Doug was a talented artist and terrific storyteller. He was always happy to tell a story to anyone willing to listen. Doug's greatest pastime was watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Roxanna; children, Jessica Mixer of Porter, M.E., Amanda Mixer and husband Jory Bailey of Silver Lake, N.H., Tegan Mixer and partner Troy Peavey of Raymond, M.E., Nicholas Moulton and fiancée Molly Lydigsen of Port Orange, F.L., Lane Melanson and partner Joshua Guptill of Baldwin, M.E., Carla Wakefield and husband Michael of South Hiram, M.E., and Duncan Mixer of Portland, M.E.; grandchildren Boone, Natalie, Dodge, Cameron, Allison, Sage, Royal, Abel, River, and one grandson on the way; cherished sisters, Mardy Bogar and husband John of Farmington, M.E., and Judy Stockman and partner David of Wolfeboro, N.H.; Roxanna's brother Jeffrey Snipe and sister Georgina Moran; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Doug was predeceased by parents, John and Orilla Mixer, and his sister, Joan Mixer.

A memorial service will be held on April 5, 2025 at 1 p.m. at Melvin Village Community Church in Tuftonboro, N.H., to be followed by a celebration of life at Purity Spring Resort in Madison, N.H. If you wish to send flowers, please send to 14 School Street, Porter, M.E.

I first met Doug when he asked me if I would play on his softball team. I said I´d love to. We played in a field next to his house in Cornish where the Big Apple is today. We weren´t very good but we had a LOT of fun. Many times on Doug´s way home from work he would stop at Welch´s Discount Store where I worked just to talk shop and of course, sports. Doug was truly one of the nicest men I have ever known, he will be missed by all.
Goodbye friend and R.I.P.

Doug fought harder than anyone I have ever had the privilege of caring for. The motivation behind that fight was always his beautiful family and knowing that he could soak up your presence. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of his team for the last 3 years. I feel honored to have known him and to have been fighting this long battle with him. Your family will always hold a special place in my heart. Sarah

Dear Roxie and Family,
I was saddened to hear of Doug's passing. He was a wonderful parent and community member. I will always cherish the drawing of South Hiram Elementary School that he gifted me. It was a reflection of his thoughtfulness and deep connection to the community. Please know that my thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.

Our family´s thoughts and prayers are with all who loved and knew Doug. Doug always had a smile on his face and was such a great man. I am honored to have known him and work beside him on the football boosters. He was always willing to help out in any way he possibly could and gave so much of himself in everything he did.

I was lucky enough to have met Doug as a teenager working for him at Toys. The true embodiment of what a good boss/man is. In my middle age I was lucky enough again to get to see him many times again and talk with him about life and gain a good bit enlightenment. I will forever treasure the Geoffrey pin he gave me. God bless Doug and the light he put on the world. My Sympathies to Roxanna and his family.
