Surrounded by his loving family, Douglas York Powers, 65, of
Montvale, Va. peacefully stepped from this world into his eternal home on January 4, 2025, in Sylvania, Ohio. After battling many health issues, he finally received his complete healing and is reunited with his dear mother, father, brother and other family members and friends. We are all sure he heard the words, "Well done my good and faithful servant", from his Lord and Savior. Doug was a Pastor for much of his life, licensed in the Church of God of Prophesy in 1981. His first church was the New Castle Church of God of Prophecy where he pastored for 14 years. He then evangelized for Zion Assembly Church of God in Roanoke, Va. for 3 years. At the end of his preaching career, he pastored One Faith Fellowship, in
Montvale, Va. for 7 years, until June of 2024 when he was forced to resign due to his worsening health issues. Doug was very elegant with his words and would talk to anyone on anyone's level to share the love of Christ. His heart was always focused on the things of God and the salvation of everyone he met. He shared his testimony and what the Lord had done for him, right up until he was no longer able to speak, then used a board until he was no longer able to write. He was also an outstanding musician and songwriter. Land of the Free was a song he wrote after the 9/11 attacks on our country, that stayed in the top 10 on the national charts for about 3 months beating out big name artists, Brooks N Dunn and Vince Gill. He and childhood friends started a rock band in high school called The Sounds of Grass, he then played with the gospel group, The Kings Messengers, and then with the Christian Contemporary band, Wings of Faith. He also enjoyed playing bluegrass with his wife's family during pickins' held at their home each year. He mainly played guitar and drums but also tried his hand at other instruments.
Early in his musical career, he had an opportunity to play with the well-known southern rock/ country band, The Outlaws, but he turned that opportunity down to stay home with his family and to follow God's calling. Doug was also an avid motorcycle rider, loving being in the wind on his Harley-Davidson, often with his wife, or alone or with a few friends. Being the natural funny man that he was, Doug was always the life of the party keeping everyone in stitches with laughter. Some say he missed his calling and could have done stand-up comedy.
Douglas is proceeded in death by his mother, Emeline (Lynn) Powers, his father, Lowell Powers, his brother, Gary Powers, and many other uncles, aunts and cousins. Those left here to yearn to see him again are, his wife, Vicky L. Powers, son, Jacob McCartney Powers (Shannon), granddaughter, Vivian Grace Powers, Daughter, Samantha Alifair Powers, Stepson, Michael Joshua Redick, step grandson, Greyson Cash Redick, his brother, Richard Powers (Cheryl), nephews, Brandon Powers (Lydia), grandnephew, Finley York Powers, Tyler Powers and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Doug cared for everyone but called a few people very close friends. Among those few were Daniel Crouch, Bobby Garman, Ginny Hale, Bishop Lanny Carter, Pastor Dewey Gibson and of course, all his childhood buddies from Norton.
