Dr. Juan Francisco ESTABLE PUIG Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Feb. 7, 2018.
ESTABLE PUIG, Professor Dr. Juan Francisco On February 3, 2018, after a prolonged illness, Juan Francisco (Paco) Estable Puig passed away at Ottawa Civic Hospital. His beloved wife, Rosita Mercedes Ferrero de Estable, predeceased him in 2013. He will be missed by his brother Clemente (Dora Pereira), his sisters-in-law Sonia Ferrero (Victor Facal, deceased) and Ana María Tellechea (Mario Ferrero, deceased), his children Alma Rosa (John Sydor), Cristina Isabel, Adriana Beatriz (Jean-Marc Bergevin), Juan Francisco (Cristina Echenique), Mario Clemente (divorced), Ana María (Melanie Estable-Porter), José Antonio (Sylvie Chiasson) and Luis Pablo (Julie Tremblay); sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who lovingly refer to him as Tata, as well as cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Born on October 5, 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay, to Clemente Estable Falobella and Isabel Puig Cardama, Juan Francisco was the youngest of three children: Isabel (Norberto Estrada both deceased) and Clemente. He graduated in Medicine from Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay, then earned a PhD from Stanford University, California. His career led him to the United States (AFIP, Washington D.C.; NASA's Ames Research Center, California) and Québec, Canada (Université Laval, Faculté de médecine) where he taught generations of medical students and did research for 30 years, alongside his wife and lifetime colleague Rosita. After having been Cultural Attaché to the Uruguayan Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s, he again served in a similar capacity in Canada. After retirement, Paco and Rosita dedicated time to family, friends, travel and philanthropy, most notably supporting a network of public schools in Uruguay and the non-profit Clemente Estable Foundation, of which Paco was President for many years. His interests were broad and eclectic, ranging from science to literature, music to soccer, philosophy to politics, theology to theatre. All who knew him appreciated his boundless generosity, great knowledge, intellectual curiosity and sense of humour. He was especially touched by the Catholic message of compassion, strongly supported social and economic justice, and frequently helped those in need. He was a dedicated son and brother, an exemplary husband, a loving and responsible father, a caring uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather, a brilliant thinker and gifted teacher, and a compassionate friend to people from all walks of life. He will live forever in our hearts. Friends may call at Tubman Funeral Home, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., or on February 10, 2018 at Sagrada Familia Catholic Church, 152 Glenora Street, Ottawa, at 10:30 a.m. Funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. ; interment at Hope Cemetery, 4660 Bank St., will follow.
