Dr. Kathryn Mary "Kathy" Carbone, M.D., born October 18, 1956 in Baltimore, Maryland, died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday July 23, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee. A physician, researcher, mentor, and friend to animals, she spent her days helping both people and pets live healthier lives.

After completing her education at Harvard-Radcliffe College magna cum laude in '79 and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in '83, Dr. Carbone embarked on a remarkable career. She specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, conducting groundbreaking research as a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and later Associate Director for Research at the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) and Deputy Scientific Director of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Her contributions as Chief of Pediatric and Respiratory Viruses at CBER and Chief of the Medicine Service at the Phoenix Veteran's Hospital have left a lasting impact on the medical community. Throughout her career, she displayed not only unique intellect, leadership, and effectiveness, but also a compassionate patient focus and constant support for the faculty, staff, and trainees under her.

Beyond her career, Dr. Carbone's passion for animals shone brightly. She founded Golden Retriever Rescue, Education and Training (GRREAT) in 1988, one of the nation's oldest purebred dog rescues. Her involvement in rescuing dogs, horses, and birds highlighted her compassionate nature. She had a longtime affection for the country, people, food, and music of Scotland, and especially loved its murder mysteries as a long-time member of the Tartan Noir Reading Group in St. Andrews. After retirement, she loved to tour with the Winnebago Fuse Mobile Home owners group.

In memory of Dr. Carbone, contributions can be made to the Paul P. Carbone, M.D. Foundation in lieu of flowers. https://carbonefoundation.org
