Drew Mellen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2018.
Dr. Arthur "Drew" William Mellen, IV
March 15, 1954 – October 27, 2018

Dr. Arthur "Drew" William Mellen, IV, beloved husband, adored brother, proud father, idolized grandfather, and devoted physician, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. His passing came after a 12-year battle with myelofibrosis and leukemia, throughout which he demonstrated a level of soft-spoken determination and grit that his family will forever aspire to emulate.

Drew was born March 15, 1954 to the late Mary "Mare" Jane Lind Mellen and Arthur "Andy" William Mellen, III. The eldest of 6 children who grew up together in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy ('72) before matriculating to Harvard College ('76). He then studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College ('80), after which he completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital, where he went on to practice as a physician for 33 years. Over the course of his career he delivered more than 7,000 babies and mentored hundreds of residents and fellows. He was adored by his patients, who appreciated his calming presence, and was deeply respected by his colleagues and peers, who valued his mentorship and friendship.

On August 21, 1982 he married Jennifer Ann Metzler, also of Bethlehem. They settled in the Barclay Farms neighborhood of Cherry Hill, NJ, where within a close community of dear friends they raised four children, Peter (1984), Gregory (1986), Phoebe (1989), and Matthew (1991).

An avid athlete throughout his youth, he took to running in medical school. In total, he completed 17 marathons, with a personal best of 2:48. His standing offer of $100 to any friend of his children who can beat his best time will continue to be honored by his family. He later took to golf, a passion he shared with his brothers and his dear Cherry Hill friends. A true sports enthusiast, he was a lifelong New York Giants fan and cherished decades of friendly banter with his friends, patients, and coworkers - even the Eagles fans among them.

His favorite place in the world was Avalon, NJ where he had vacationed with his family as a child, and where he and Jenn have continued to vacation with their family to this day. Some of his family's fondest and purest memories of Drew involve summers at the beach with cousins, friends, and most recently grandchildren.

A man of few words, he had a realistic yet positive outlook on life: there's a lot you can't control, so don't dwell on it, and go do what you can with what you've got. Common manifestations of his perspective were phrases like, "What're you gonna do?", "Suck it up", and "Figure it out"- refrains that he would repeat throughout his fight with cancer. Never one to complain, when asked how he was doing throughout his treatment, even in the harshest phases, he would reliably reply, "Good."

His family, friends, coworkers and patients all absorbed his resilience, as well as his appreciation for the fact that the most important things in life are the simple ones right in front of you – loving family, dear friends, fulfilling work, and good jokes (and of course the New York Football Giants). His was a gentle presence that made those around him feel appreciated and at ease, and he will be sorely missed by all.

Drew is survived by his wife, Jennifer Metzler Mellen, of Cherry Hill, NJ; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Laura Mellen, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Tessa Mellen, of Wayland, MA; son, Gregory Mellen, of Cambridge, MA; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Phoebe Mellen and Dr. Ryan Watson, of Philadelphia, PA; and son, Matthew Mellen, of San Francisco, CA. He is predeceased by his sister, Susan Mellen Hahn, and survived by his 4 living siblings: Lynn Mellen Wendell of San Francisco, CA; Robert Lind Mellen of Duxbury, MA; M. Scott Mellen of Boston, MA; Christopher Mellen of Lynnfield, MA; as well as their spouses and his 16 beloved nieces and nephews.

Drew and his family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospital staff that supported him throughout his treatment – particularly the transfusion and bone marrow transplant staff at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Family and friends are invited to a Visitation Thursday, November 1st from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at BLAKE-DOYLE Funeral Home, 226 W. Collings Ave, Collingswood, NJ. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 2nd at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church in Haddonfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Drew Mellen Fund c/o Dr. Steven Ralston, Department of OB/GYN at Pennsylvania Hospital at 2 Pine East, 800 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107, or to the National Marrow Donor Registry at www.bethematch.org. I just learned of Dr. Mellen's passing. He will always have a special place in my heart and mind. As a first time mom and single at age 38 in 1988, he was my confidant, my rock and of course an excellent doctor. I was blessed to have had him with me during the most important period of my life. I have told my son over and over of the story of his birth when Dr. Mellen handed him to me and said, "Here's your baby, Sharon." The best words I ever heard and his voice still echos in my ear. Rest easy, dear friend, know that you had a life well lived and were loved by so many. Bless his loving family and friends as they grieve the loss of his bright light and all that he was to them.

So saddened to learn of his passing. Dr. Mellen was my doctor for almost 30 years. He saved my life not once, but twice, discovering early signs of two different cancers that initial test results missed, but his expertise and diligence as a physician uncovered. The medical community shall not see his like again. Thank you and RIP Dr. Mellen.

Dr. Mellen delivered my second child in April 1988. I saw him beginning with that pregnancy and until he left the practice. He saw me through some tough episodes and I always looked forward to my annual visit. I have extremely warm memories of him, and admired greatly how he lived his life.

So very sad to hear this. Not only did Dr. Mellen deliver my twins, but he delivered babies of some of my favorite people. By the time the twins pregnancy was viable, I had been through 5 IVF cycles and I was a neurotic mess. Every twinge, every cold, the minor things and the not so minor things- the terror after finding out in an early ultrasound that one baby had a brain cyst that could either be nothing, or could be Trisomy 18, or when I called him paranoid when I had the flu on vacation and was worried how that would affect the twins. Each time, he calmed me down- not with a pat on the head and it will be fine dear, but by providing facts and reassurance in a calm manner to help me slowly realize over the course of the pregnancy that I might actually be one of the lucky ones who gets two healthy babies in the end. He had that amazing combination of a wonderful bedside manner and excellent diagnostic and surgical skills, which were eventually needed given that the twins were breech & transverse. I am forever grateful to him for helping us complete our family.

I am so saddened of the passing of such a wonderful and kindest of people like Dr Mellen. He delivered both my daughters and will always be remembered as that very kind, smart and professional of physicians. Pennsylvania and the world will not be the same without him. Condolences and deepest empathy to the family.

I have SO many fond memories of Drew! I met him during his first year of residency at Pennsylvania Hospital, while I was working there in the ICU and Step Down areas. He was bright, compassionate and funny! I ran into him often over the years after I left there. He always wanted to know how you were doing and " what's going on" both personally and professionally. Time never seemed to weaken the connection he had to you and for you. He was a great physician and guided many, including friends of mine, through some challenging and difficulty pregnancies. Hi was a life well lived, His wit and contagious smile is something I will always remember.
My deepest and sincerest sympathy to the entire family. May he rest in eternal peace.

The services today were one of the most beautiful services I have been too.
Drew will always have a special
place in my ❤ !
I met him 15 years ago, great advisor, great OB, great friend!
Ill alway remember the look on his face when I asked, as he was writing in my chart almost 14 yrs ago... I asked, since Im having a c-section do you think you could add a few modifiers and do lyposuction on my stomach then make two small incisions on my inner thighs while you have me open? He stops writing, only his eyes move above his glasses and says no, then continues to write!! Gotta love him!!
He is and will always be one in a million, no matter what I said or asked, his reply was ok babe.
I want to thank you Drew for being in my life, for your advise, (no matter what the subject was), and for allowing me the greatest opportunity to know you!!
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family not only today, but every day!❤

Helaine and I are in shock over Drew's passing. Besides being Helaine's Doctor and employer for many years, he delivered Harrison, ( right on his due date) and made many helpful suggestions for me for some of my orthopedic issues. The last time we saw him was about 2 years ago. He was amazed at how big Harrison got, but said I looked the same, after all these years. God bless him. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Jenn, I cant tell you how sorry I am to hear of Drews passing. I remember all the great times we had as BC freshman and how much I enjoyed Drews regular visits. He was so sweet to me and all the Cheverus girls. I always thought you were so lucky to have such a nice guy madly in love with you. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family at this time. I am so so sorry. Love always, Ellen Paisley ❤❤❤

To the entire Mellen Family, I am truly saddened, and so very sorry for your loss! My prayers are with all of you. Dr. Mellen was a wonderful and caring doctor, as well as a kind and gentle man. He took care of me throughout my high risk pregnancy 21 years ago, making sure I was at ease with each situation that arose. He was a doctor who truly took interest in your concerns. His calmness, demeanor and professionalism were special gifts. Because of him, I am a mother of a beautiful son! My heart goes out to all of you. His memory will always be with me. God Bless You!!
