Duane Garren Obituary

Published by The Repository or The Independent on Apr. 22, 2008.
Duane D. Garren
Duane D. Garren, age 68, of Canton, passed away early Sunday morning, April 20, 2008, in his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born in Louisville, September 30, 1939, and was the son of the late Cleta Garren and Carl Garren. Duane graduated from Timken High School in 1957; and attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. During his life, he retired from two careers, the first from the Canton Police Dept. where he served for 16 years, and then from Fisher Foods where he served as Chief of Security for 19 years. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the F.O.P., C.P.P.A. and Yesterdays Classic Car Club. Everyone knew Duane was an avid Notre Dame fan and also a fan of Ohio State. Duane had the greatest admiration for his eight grandchildren - fond memories of riding with grandpa in the golf cart will certainly be reminisced. Golfing, fishing and traveling were also part of Duane's past time activities. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, with whom he would have celebrated 42 years of marriage this July 9th.; a daughter, Kristie (Tom) Minner of London, OH; sons, Dr. Kurt (Dawn) Garren of Dover, OH and Dennis Garren of Canton; a sister, Elaine (Don) Langman of North Canton; grandchildren, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Kirsten Garren, Jessie, Logan and Robert Minner and Elizabeth and Rebecca Garren; two half sisters and a half brother; many caring nieces and nephews as well as many close friends. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Ronald Klingler as Celebrant and Fr. Joseph Witmer as concelebrant. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from noon-2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. in the Williams Funeral Home where the F.O.P. will hold a service at 4:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Duane D. Garren Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Stark Community Foundation, 400 Market Ave. N, Suite 200, Canton, OH 44702.

Please know you are covered with prayers at this difficult time. Duane was a great guy and will live in our hearts forever. I am so glad we had some time to share at St. Michael's and then at Grinders. We never know when our Lord will call us Home, but all we have to do is be ready! I am just so sorry I did not get to talk to you more at Senior EXPO, and I could not find Duane when I got inside. Let's try to get together Kathy. You are Loved and cared about by me and your many friends and especially your wonderful children. God Bless you and hold you close - I know HE will. Always, Wanda

Elaine and Dr. Garren:
When I found out at work that Dr. Garrens father had passed it never occured to me that his father was your brother Elaine. I instantly went back to all of the good times I had in your home after church on Sunday and some weekends. Duane teased me like the big brother I never had. I remember him fondly and extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy.

Duane was a wonderful man, one who will never be forgotten. Working with Duane at Fishers was never a dull moment, his comments would often put a smile on your face. Duane was a very caring and giving man. As a wedding gift to me and my husband he offered to drive us in his car. I will never forget Duane. We want to offer our sincere sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. Jeff and I have both lost parents(my father in Dec. of '08.) and do understand the pain and sorrow of it all. We will be praying for all of you in the days to come. Loosing a loved one is certainly one of the most difficult things to go through. Look to the Lord for your strength each day. Nahum1:7 says, The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble: and he knoweth them that trust in him. He will sustain you just as He has us.
In Sympathy,
