Duane WILSON Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Nov. 29 to Nov. 30, 2012.
WILSON, Duane John
Passed away suddenly at Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 3, 2012. Duane's great heart, gentle kindness and understanding, love and humor will be sorrowfully missed forever by Dawn Marcelle Wilson, his loving Mother, dearest friend, co- worker, and travelling companion; his loving sister and dear lifelong best friend Natalie Rae Wilson and loving niece Callaigh Crary and loving nephew Kyle Crary, whom Duane deeply loved and helped care for upon the illness and passing of his brother-in-law Richard Crary. Duane John is survived by his loving aunts; Mary, Gail, Rae, Agnes, Marion, and uncle Herb, and many loving cousins; Johnny, Dawn, Edie, Kathy, John, Shawna, Brent, Lorraine, Linda, Gordan, June, Pattie Gerry, Rob, Devona, Craig, Leslie, Lisa, Wade, Anne, and Valerie. Our dearest Duane joins his predeceased loving father Donald Wilson, maternal grandparents; John and Paula, paternal grandparents; John and Annie, uncles; John, Alex, Bobby, Bob, Ralph, Charlie, Gavin and Matthew, aunts; Nallie, Mona, and Hannah, and cousins; Jeannie, Lori, and twins Bonnie and Roy, as well as faithful family companions; protector dog "Klinger" (who rode the motorcycle with Duane on occasion), and his Maincoon cats "Kona" and "Koko". Duane was born and raised in Calgary. During his childhood he won many awards in Highland dancing, including a palm tree Trophy at the first Hawaiian Highland Games, which he treasured. Duane studied Royal Conservatory piano and vocal, participating in Calgary Music Festivals, Musical Theatre "Oliver", and he was singer with the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede. Duane also played little league baseball and hockey, and he loved to skate and snow ski. He was an avid downhill skier, that included acrobatic skiing/jumping, and he was a gold medal gymnast. He loved all water sports, in particular swimming, diving, water skiing, boating and fishing. Duane graduated from Bishop Grandin High School, followed by post graduate studies at Mount Royal and SAIT, graduating in Telecommunications Engineering. Duane moved to Vancouver in 1997 where he studied further Telecommunications Technology at BCIT (Honours). On weekends he enjoyed time with his family. He attended Our Lady of Fatima and St. Joseph's parishes, where he spent many fun times with his family at church functions and dinners. On holidays, Duane travelled to many exotic tropical isles with his family, where he enjoyed all of his loved water sports and reading. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Bernard's Catholic Church (711 - 37 Street N.W.) on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Catholic Church (711 - 37 Street N.W.) on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Duane's family through www.evanjstrong.com. Duane worked with us here at Santel from the late 1990's and again right until spring of 2012. Great guy with a wonderful heart. Always thought about others and gave it his best even as his health started failing. Our respects to his family.

Dear Natalie,

Though I moved to Europe over 20 years ago I will never forget the friends I went to Bishop Grandin High School with. And one of the most memorable protagonists of this tribute to Woodstock we lived through during our teenage years was your dear and beloved brother, Duane. The thing that always impressed me the most was his style of which he had more anyone I knew at that time. His walk, his talk, his thoughts all made him a most unique and appealing person to want to get to know. He was a bright young man.
It is a tragedy that Duane had his life come to such an early end. You certainly deserved to have him in your life for many more years to come as I know how close the two of you were . I also feel great sadness for his mother who had to see her child go before her. It's terribly unfair.
Next time I am in Canada on a visit I will certainly come visit you to share some of these precious memories we both have of your brother.

Duane and I were buds though most of our elementary school days at St Gerards and kept in touch off and on through the years. He was full of life and had grown into a fine man. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Me and my family's thoughts and prayers are with those he has left behind.
