Edith Roebuck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2023.
Edith passed away at 94, in her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was Melvin's beloved wife of 70 years; Daniel, Laura, Ellen, and Joshua's loving mother; Rhoda's beloved sister; cherished grandmother of Benjamin, Dan, and Daavi; beloved aunt of David, Michele, Lisa, Beth, and Lexi; and loving mother-in-law of Laura, Bill and Louesa.

Edith grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She and Mel moved to Cleveland in 1953, where they raised their family. In 1986 they relocated to Boston, then to Los Angeles in 2000, following their children who had one by one moved to California.

Edith was a respected music educator whose broad range of experience included teaching at all levels from pre-K to university. Her expertise and passion centered on teaching young children, as well as training teachers in early music education. She was a singer, played piano and guitar, and was a lover of all music - especially opera, attending live performances or listening with Mel to the Met radio broadcasts on Saturday mornings.

She was inquisitive and excited about learning until her last day. When her eyesight diminished she listened to her Audible books nightly, embracing her heroes - Ayla, the Obamas, Nancy Pelosi, and most recently Julia Child. She cherished talking with family and friends every day.

Her memorial service was held at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles on October 12, 2022.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Retina Vitreous Foundation and the Metropolitan Opera International Radio Broadcasts Guild.

I just picked up the obituary for Edith today. My condolences to Daniel, Laura, Ellen, and Josh. When I moved with my husband, Chick, and my children to Scottsdale Blvd. in Shaker Hts. in 1965, Edith and Mel were among the first neighbors we met. We volunteered with them in the Lomond Association and enjoyed neighborhood get-togethers. I remember Edith as smart and savvy and musically talented. It was a pleasure to get a surprise phone call from her and Laura last year. Through social media, they had tracked me down. We had a lovely long talk, and I so appreciated talking to a friend from so long ago.

May her memory be a blessing.
