Edward Nejame Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2014.
Edward R. Nejame, Sr., 82, a lifelong resident of Danbury and the husband of the late Lucille Barbarotto Nejame, died on February 21, 2014 at Bethel Health Care in Bethel, CT. Born in Danbury, Ed was the son of Thomas and Lillian George Nejame.

Ed and his family lived above the family's grocery store, established in 1921, Thomas Nejame IGA Food Market, at 91 South Street, Danbury, where Ed insisted on working in the family business at the young age of 7. After his father's death, Ed became a butcher and managed the store, alongside his mother, until 1971. At that time, Ed went into the home improvement and swimming pool business, NeJame Co., Inc. with his brother-in-law, Charles. In 1986, Ed became partners with his three sons: Tom, Ed Jr. and Greg in Nejame & Sons and together they grew into one of the largest swimming pool companies in the northeast, which Ed was extremely proud of.

Ed attended St. Peter's School, South Street School and graduated from Danbury High School in 1949. During his youth, Ed played baseball at the Danbury War Memorial park where he was affectionately nicknamed "Cookie" after Harry Arthur "Cookie" Lavagetto for his batting skills.

Ed was also a premiere jazz drummer that practiced five hours a day; he studied and perfected many forms of percussion. During the 1960's he would play at local establishments with his band, Eddie Nejame's Silvertones. Ed was an avid NY Giants fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching the games on Sundays with his sons and grandchildren. His spirit made them all Giants fans.

Ed is survived by his children: Thomas and his wife, Jackie, of Danbury. Jenifer and her husband, Barry Parish, of Hershey, PA. Edward, Jr. and his wife, Caron, of Danbury. Gregory and his wife, Sheila, of New Fairfield. "Papa" was most loved and will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Thomas, Brittany, Matthew, Jason, Michael and Anthony Nejame and Madeleine Parish. Ed also had many nieces and nephews. Along with his family he was most grateful for the love and care given by his lady friend of 23 years, Nancy Tomkins. Predeceasing Ed was his sister, Elaine NeJame.

The Rite of Burial will be conducted Monday at 10am at St. Ann Melkite Church, 181 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury, with the Rt. Rev. Michael K. Skrocki, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Mr. Nejame always made time for me, which I appreciated. He was a good listener, asked smart and insightful questions, and it was definitely a pleasure to sit down with him. He will be missed by so many friends in the pool/spa industry. My condolences to Ed, Tom, and the entire Nejame family.

Dear Tommy, Eddie, Gregory and family, I am so sorry to hear of Edward's passing. I'm afraid I heard after the services, so sorry to not have been there. I have wonderful memories of being the "water girl" at the showroom during my college years! I learned many things from your parents including the proper way to string lights on a Christmas tree (your Mom!) and why treating people with respect was not only the right thing to do, but a good business practice(your Dad!). Laura(Tichey) Ross and I shared wonderful lunches with your Dad where he would laughingly reminisce about how he would want to marry us off to his sons. He would then tell us how grateful and appreciative he was for the wonderful women that you married. I shall truly miss him. Keeping you all in my prayers.

My Dad used to take me to Nejames' for groceries back in the fifties. One day he left without me. I'll never forget the kindness I was shown by Mr. and Mrs. They treated me like a super star and filled me with goodies until my Dad got back. Wonderful people.

My family always shopped at Nejame's and thought a lot of Tom and Lillian and family. Wonderful people, all. Sorry for your loss. My Dad was 'Dibber' Russell, from Spaulding's Bakery. Know that a great many people feel the same way, and I hope that knowledge gives you comfort.

Many fond memories of Ed Sr.
A very interesting and funny guy. He will be missed and thought of often.

February 23, 2014

Dear Tommy, Jen, Eddie and Gregory,
Your Dad hired me as a "pool girl" in 1980...I was in college studying to be a Medical Technologist and thought the pool water testing industry would be good for my resume. I met wonderful people at Nejames (remember your dad always said he was the "little j" in Nejames....) Anyway, I was welcomed and felt like an adopted daughter. I loved Lucy and I considered Edward a challenge. He used to tease me about becoming a daughter in law, but that wasn't meant to be (you Nejame boys just did fine without me!) The best part of being a pool girl was meeting my future best friend Caroline... we were in each other's weddings and still are very close. Edward still thought he had dibs on us and would contact us every year and invite us to lunch at Barberies. And we tried to make it happen because your dad was a special guy. You could love him or he could make you crazy...but he loved his family and thought the world of all of you. Nothing made him prouder than bragging about his family. He was a father figure to us, "the pool girls"...and we will miss getting together for lunch with him.
You are very lucky to have had him on earth and be sure he is watching out for you all from above.
You can never replace your Dad. But he was so proud of all of you.
My deepest condolences,
Laura (Tichey) Ross

Edward was such a generous man not only in his support to the many charities he supported, but also with his love to everyone he came in contact with. He would tease us all with a twinkle in his eye and an impish grin. He was a joy to work with and an honor to call friend. My deepest sympathy to the Nejame family. Thank you for letting me be a small part of Edwards life. He will be genuinely missed.
