Passed away Saturday, November 30, 2002, at his home. Edwin was born in Lincoln, NE, January 9, 1916, the son of Ralph and Freda (Zimmerman) Polk. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; a WW II Navy veteran, having served as a PT boat officer in the South Pacific; a 1937 graduate of Western State Teachers College and was a junior high teacher in the Detroit area for 40 years. Edwin was a life member of the Retired Officer's Association, Military Order of the Purple Heart, U.S. Naval Institute and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed photography and model boat construction. On June 24, 1939, he married Margaret R. Connor, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carole (Steven) Gillesby of Decatur, MI, and Gayle (Mark) Hoffman of Orchard Lake, MI; four grandsons, Brent (Sara) Gillesby of Dowagiac, Jonathan (Rose) Gillesby of Decatur, Eric Hoffman and Matthew Hoffman of Orchard Lake; a great-grandson, Ryan Gillesby; a nephew, Jeffrey Dawson. Edwin was preceded in death by a son, Brent Polk, on March 24, 1967; and a sister, Eleanor Dawson. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home. Memorial services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 321 W. South St. Private interment of cremains in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, the Friends of the Historic East Campus (WMU), or Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo.
