Elder Samuel Thomas, Sr.
August 15, 1918 – March 26, 2015
Born in the community of Tutwiler, MS, August 15, 1918, Elder Samuel Thomas, Sr. met Christ and Biblical values through reading Bible Readings for the Home. Deprivation and near starvation in his childhood, built a man who was not easily dissuaded from his focused goal. Growing up during the depression and serving in WWII, left an indelible impression on the necessity of being frugal, responsible, accountable, building character values in his children, crafting manly sons, and teaching a strong work ethic. He and his wife, Laura Hubbard, of Baton Rouge, LA were avid supporters of Christian education and fostered within their four children (Loleta; Samuel, Jr.; Ouida; and Leander) a love for God, respect for country, and uncompromising dedication to the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. Elder Samuel Thomas, Sr. loved being a dad. His background of a godless home and generational unchurched family system, established within him a steadfast commitment to family worship, family vacations around the country, and loyalty to God's Biblical instruction and the Spirit of Prophecy. Uncompromising in principle, Elder Thomas never lost sight of teaching his children the necessity of independent and analytical thought. Military training and his conversion from the gang land years of prohibition made him especially particular about maintaining truth and advancing the truth.
Determined, committed, dedicated, creative, and a lover of people were some of the characteristics which made Elder Samuel Thomas, Sr. one of the most beloved pioneers within Regional Conference history. Early in his ministry, in the South Atlantic Conference, Elder Thomas developed several strategies for mobilizing churches for effective evangelism. While director of Personal Ministries, 1956 - 1967, he organized the first Lay Person's Congress, hosted by the Berean SDA Church in Atlanta, GA. When he was called to serve as the first Personal Ministries Director in the newly formed Allegheny West Conference (AWC) in 1967, Elder Thomas transferred the effective strategies gained from lay evangelistic meetings facilitated in the South Atlantic territory and launched the second Lay Person's Congress hosted by the Glenville SDA Church in Cleveland, OH. Both churches were pastored by Elder H.L. Cleveland, although several years apart. Elder Thomas's innovative methods and stellar results for empowering members to public evangelism drew the attention of the Columbia Union Conference in 1976. After serving the AWC for nine years, he transitioned to the new post in Takoma Park, MD (now headquartered in Columbia, MD) and became the first African-American Director for the Columbia Union. His ministry portfolio consisted of Personal Ministries, Sabbath School Ministries, Inner City Ministries, Community Services, and ASI.
Elder Samuel Thomas, Sr. passed to Christian rest, Wednesday morning, March 26.
Elder Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Laura Hubbard Thomas, and their three children, Loleta Thomas Bailey, Samuel Thomas, Jr., and Leander Thomas. Elder Thomas is also survived by two wonderful grandchildren, Samuel III, and Christine Elaine Thomas.

I first met Elder Thomas at my grandparents Elder and Mrs M. G. Cato's home in Atlanta, GA. A year later, Elder Thomas came to my home church in Detroit.
This was my first opportunity to hear him preach. His ministry had a profound impact on my life. I was a Literature Evangelist for many years, from the message I heard him preach, when I was six years old.
I last saw him in 2008. He was a tremendous blessings and inspiration in my life.

To Mrs Laura Thomas & Family.
We are deeply sadden for your loss. As neighbors for over 20-25 years, we have loved our time spent with Elder Thomas and Mrs. Thomas as well. He was a sweet man, so kind with a big-heart and very wise. We admired him so much and enjoyed every conversation and visit with him when he was out walking in the neighborhood. He was an amazing man and he will be greatly missed. We will especially miss seeing him as he relaxed in his lounging chair in the garage. Sometimes we would stop and have a good chat and lots of laughs with him. He was always on fire for the Lord and shared many stories with us about his life and his ministry. May God bless you Mrs. Thomas; your children and grandchildren. With much love and heartfelt sympathy. Lawrence & Angela Griffin, Neighbors (Delong Dr.)

Dear Mrs. Thomas & Family, I am deeply sadden to learn of the passing of Elder Thomas. We are sharing; as you experience the loss of your husband. I met the two of you several years ago; by way of Dr. Nell Anthony, when you returned back to Huntsville to live. The two of you have been such a Blessing to me down through the years. I truly pray that God will grant you sweet peace, that surpasses all understanding at this time, and in the days ahead. Elder Thomas was a devout christian and truly loved the lord. He was very wise; and when ever he shared his wisdom and knowledge with you; you could rest upon it. Mrs. Thomas; please know that I am lifting you, and your entire family up to the lord; for comfort and strength. I love each of you dearly and will be in contact soon. Blessings to you.

Aunt Laura, and family,
Know that our prayers are with you, and the family. We feel your hurt, and share your loss. Death is something we can never prepare for. We look forward to seeing Uncle Sammy again in the earth made new. In heaven their will be no more sickness, no more pain, no more sorry, and no more death. The fun memories I have of Uncle Sammy are he always greeted you with a firm love pat on my back; this was one of his ways of showing love, and getting your attention. He told me to always look a person in the eyes when you talk to them. One of his phrases was "Did you get that or did you miss it" of course I got it those words carried power. During the harvest in-gathering campaign each year he would say "I got my one for sixty- one, and I'm working on my two for sixty- two. In 2014 me, and my daughter visited Aunt Laura, and Uncle Sammy several times. Uncle Sammy would always embrace us, and tell us how much he loved us. He was truly a man of God always on fire winning souls for the kingdom of God. Uncle Sammy will always have a special place in our hearts.

In closeness to his son, Samuel, we were privileged to know Pastor Thomas. We cherish fond memories. His kindly affections made us feel like family. His preaching with poetic eloquence commanded attention to every word of the gospel. His wit of wisdom took us into deep waters of reason. His passion of evangelism was a model for us who follow his trek into the wilderness of souls. The greatest tribute one can pay to greatness, is to emulate it! Indeed, "We got it! We didn't miss it!"

Aunt Laura and Family,
Our prayers and hearts are with you during this time. We remember the joys of Uncle Sammy and his emphasis to understand the word of God in the saying, " Did you get it or missed it?" No one can forget the strong pat on the back of encouragement and love. The truth of God plainly revealed, his love of his family and the hope of the second coming are his legacy for the Lord. We got it and he will be greatly missed. The Daly Family ( Barry, Lacretia, Solomon and Johnathan)

To the Family of Elder Samuel Thomas Sr.
Our hearts share your hurt and your hope. Hurt over separation, Hope over reunion in God's Tomorrow. Sam Thomas in the pulpit parlance of our day was a "hoss". A dynamic preacher and presenter who often opened with, "Ready on the left, ready on the right, ready on the firing line." He lived his life "ready on the firing line".
