Eleanor "Ellie" Jean McCarthy Dun, 82, of
Dublin, Ohio, passed away with her loving family by her side, on June 24, 2023. Ellie was born on August 4, 1940, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Helen E. (Sorenson) and Daniel J McCarthy. She was preceded in death by her brothers Dan and Don McCarthy, as well as her dear nephew and God son Michael McCarthy.
Ellie is survived by her loving children, Bill Dun (Laura) and Betsy Dun (Kelley), as well as her grandchildren Joshua Dun (Debby), Ashley Dun, Jordan Dun, and Abigail Dun. She is also survived by her niece MaryEllen Davis (Jerry) and nephews Mark McCarthy (Abi), Matt McCarthy, Pat McCarthy (Ellen), Dan McCarthy, Tom McCarthy (Karen), Tim McCarthy, Dave McCarthy, numerous great nieces and nephews and many friends.
After graduating from West Tech Senior High School in Cleveland, Ellie attended Ohio University and the Ohio State University. She completed her post-secondary education earning a Bachelor's Degree with a dual major in music and psychology from Empire State College, State University of New York in 1973.
Ellie's career as a social worker in Ohio, Florida, and Hawaii is highlighted by her time as a consultant at North Central Mental Health in Columbus, Clinical Manager at Planned Parenthood in
Boca Raton, FL and
Honolulu, HI and substitute teacher for children with special needs in Hawaii.
Ellie combined her passion for the arts and her dedication to caring for others by founding and serving as the Executive Director of the Ohio Chapter of Hospital Audiences, Inc. (HAI.) HAI was a non-profit organization that provided cultural access to music, dance, theater and the visual arts to the frail elderly, mentally and physically disabled, and seriously ill children at health and social services facilities. This was Ellie's proudest achievement and most treasured role of her professional career.
Those who knew Ellie described her as intellectually brilliant and musically gifted. She possessed a singing voice that wowed all who heard her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Above all else, Ellie valued helping others, animals and people alike. She was passionate about time with family, creativity, logic, and music. She strongly believed in the exercise of one's free will, especially when it came to end-of-life decisions.
A private Celebration of Life will be held on July 29th, 2023, for close friends and family. Those interested in attending are kindly requested to contact a family member for details.
