Eleanor Haviland Obituary

Eleanor Valerie Haviland passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Feb. 15, 2006.
Born in Stamford, England, in 1922, she served as a writer in the WREN, the Women's Royal English Navy. During World War II, she met her late husband, Dr. John Kenneth Haviland, a decorated RAF pilot. After the war they immigrated to Canada and later settled in the United States to raise their family. She was an avid tennis player, a loyal member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, and a devoted wife and mother to her family.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Susan Elizabeth Haviland and John Seeley Brown of Palo Alto, Calif., David Pairman Haviland and Mary Gunter Haviland of Abingdon, Peter Aldridge Haviland and Rachael Haviland of Tampa, Fla., Laurence Beckton Haviland and Mary Elizabeth Haviland of Roanoke and Julia Haviland Avent and Thomas Edward Avent Jr. of Arlington; and seven grandchildren and spouse, Simon Windsor Haviland, Hannah Louise Haviland Grondahl and Frederick Grondahl, Jordan Natalie Haviland, Elizabeth Aynsley Haviland, Jonathon Chase Haviland, Jonathan Baker Haviland and Emma Grace Avent.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy. The family will receive friends after the service.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 39 Southgate Court 102, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
