Elizabeth Caputo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2007.
Elizabeth G. "Betty" Caputo, Dunmore, died Sunday evening at Hospice Community Care, Dunmore, after a courageous fight against cancer. She and her husband, Joseph A. Caputo, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Aug 17.

Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Bertram J. and Mary Moffitt Blewitt, she was a graduate of St. Paul's High School, class of 1949, and a graduate of Lackawanna Business College. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Dunmore, and its Altar and Rosary Society, where she served as its first vice president. Before retirement, she was employed at the University of Scranton for 16 years as the secretary to the chairman, professors and instructors of the history and political science departments. Her faithful service and her loyalty and love for the University of Scranton is fondly remembered by her four surviving children, all of whom graduated from the university. She was also employed part-time at Sheeley's Drug Store in Scranton.

She served as secretary and treasurer of the Purple Club of the University of Scranton and enjoyed attending the university's basketball games. She also served as treasurer of the ANO Bowling League. She started and organized the Matthew J. Caputo Memorial Scholarship Race at Bishop O'Hara High School in memory of her son.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially many of her beloved close friends.

Also surviving are two daughters, Angela Giello and husband, Dan, Dunmore; and Mary Vincent and husband, Kevin, Reading; two sons, Joseph M. Caputo and wife, Kathleen, Gouldsboro; and Christopher P. Caputo and wife, Christina, Roaring Brook Township; four sisters, Mrs. James (Terry) Loftus, Dover, N.J.; Pauline M. Kearney, Clarks Summit; Bernadette Gilmartin, Scranton; and Mary P. Kelly, Clarks Summit; six grandchildren, Deanna and Jessica Giello, Dunmore; Gianna and Donato Caputo, Gouldsboro; and Matthew and Mark Caputo, Roaring Brook Township; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Caputo, in 1990; two sisters, Barbara Dougherty and Louise Coyne; and a brother, Bertram J. Blewitt Jr.

The funeral will be Friday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church. Interment will take place in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Friends may call Wednesday and Thursday, 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requests that memorial contributions be made to the Elizabeth G. "Betty" Caputo Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Scranton. Contributions may be mailed to the University of Scranton Royal Fund Office at O'Hara Hall, 18510. To the Blewitt Sisters--This is a voice from your past,(way back) Jane Ellen Finnegan Walsh. I'm so sorry to hear about Betty. I have wonderful memories of her, and oh, what great laughs when in her company. It's sad to have the good memories of your family brought to mind at a time like this but, then maybe not. Remembering folks like you, St Paul's, school, etc. is a gift. She's still doing fun things; putting a smile on my face. She did her job here, and oh so well, from what I can remember ,what I read and heard about her. God needs and wants her with Him now.
My best to all of you and please extend our condolences to her husband and family. You are in our prayers.

Joe, at times like this we must dig deep into our christian values and remember that death is the way to life. Be happy for your bride because she is now seated at the right hand. It doesn't get any better than that.

Chris:

Big Munley just called with the sad news about your mother's passing. I have always heard from the others what a beautifully sweet and wonderful person she was and I am certain she will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she has touched. I am truly sorry for your loss, Caputo. You are a good man, and that is a direct reflexion of your mother's hard work and love. You and your entire family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Although I did not know Mrs. Caputo, I recently began working at the office where her son, Joe, is a lawyer. Through getting to know Joe, it is obvious that she must have been a wonderful person and will be missed a great deal. Please accept my condolences.
