Elizabeth Anne Gordon (née Fuchs), aged 99 and a half, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 22, 2025, in
Crystal River, Florida, with her daughter Trudy and son-in-law Stephen by her side. Born on September 22, 1925, in Stamford, Connecticut, Elizabeth's nearly century-long life was marked by resilience, creativity, and a spirited charm that touched all who knew her.
A proud graduate of Darien High School in Darien, Connecticut, Class of 1943, Elizabeth pursued her passion for caring for others early on. In 1944 she attended the School for Nursery Nurses at St. Mary's Hospital for Children in New York City. She went on to work at St. Mary's for many years before transitioning into private duty infant care-a role she embraced with warmth and dedication.
In the 1960s, Elizabeth opened her heart and home as a foster mother, a journey that led to the adoption of her son John. Her commitment to caregiving continued throughout her life. After relocating to Maine in the early 1980s, she completed a course as an Assistant to Nurses in 1983. Later certified by the state of Rhode Island in 1998 as an assistant to a daycare home provider, she remained active in caregiving roles across hospitals, daycares, and private homes. Even into retirement she volunteered her time generously-in 2003 she received a certificate of appreciation from Senior Spectrums in Belfast, Maine.
Elizabeth became a saved believer in Jesus Christ at the age of 65 and held firm to her faith throughout her later years. She found joy singing in the choir and cherished the hymn "Here I Am Lord" as a personal anthem of devotion.
Her personality sparkled with wit and warmth. Known for her twinkling eyes, signature wink, and infectious laugh, Elizabeth exuded grace and flair. Her speech reflected an era of elegance-using endearing terms like "darling," "sweetheart," and "beg your pardon"-always delivered with sincerity. Fiercely independent yet endlessly loving, she brought lightness wherever she went.
Elizabeth had a playful spirit and delighted in life's simple pleasures: bingo nights and dice games; puzzles and coloring books; writing heartfelt letters; dancing-especially to "The Tennessee Waltz." She had an affinity for Betty Boop memorabilia and adored owls, Shirley Temple, seashells, lavender scents, lace details, golden hues, and perfectly styled curls.
She was predeceased by her husband Vernon Gordon of Maine; parents John Fuchs and Anna Berry of Connecticut; siblings John Fuchs, Emerson Fuchs, Elenor Fuchs, and Herman Fuchs; and one niece Debra Fuchs.
Elizabeth is lovingly remembered by her three children: daughter Berry Honore and husband Paul Honore of Hebron, Connecticut; daughter Trudy Estey and husband Stephen Estey of
Crystal River, Florida; and son John Russell of Brogan, Oregon.
Her legacy continues through nine grandchildren: Denis and Jana Pierce; Brooke Honore; Aaron and Andrea Honore; Shanna Elizabeth Strout and her husband Brian; William and Janette Johnson; David Russell; Emilee Elizabeth; John William S.; Michaela Mae-and fourteen great-grandchildren: Andrew Pierce; Brittany Higgins; Brandi Gardner; Sierra; Elise Brown; Logan Strout; Greta Honore; Margot Honore; Vanessa Johnson; Torri Johnson; Alana Bragdon; Mariah Bragdon; Rayden James Fleming; James Johnson.
