Elizabeth Nance Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2013.
Elizabeth "Beth" Waldrop Nance COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Elizabeth "Beth" Waldrop Nance, 60, of Columbia will be held at 4:30 PM Friday, January 4, 2013, at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastors Steve McCormick and Charles Seastrunk officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 3:45 PM at the church prior to the service. Beth passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at her home while surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 31, 1952, in Rock Hill, SC, Beth was the daughter of the late Robert Lindsay and Elsie Hammer Waldrop. Beth graduated from Rock Hill High School, and she earned her degree from Erskine College in 1973. Beth was a gifted educator who began her teaching career at Williams Memorial Elementary School in St. George, SC. After marrying her husband, Edward B. "Ned" Nance, in 1975, Beth moved to Columbia, and taught at Sandhills Academy. Beth then taught at St. Michaels All Angels Episcopal Preschool, where she later became director of the program. For the past 18 years, Beth taught middle school math and algebra at Timmerman School. Beth's love and dedication to her career endures forever in the minds and hearts of the countless students she guided and touched. Beth was a loving and devoted wife, mother and sister, and a loyal and caring friend to her extended family at Timmerman School. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Lindsay Nance Sorrell (Brian); son, Edward Waldrop "Ted" Nance; and grandson, Joseph Porter Sorrell, all of Columbia. Beth is also survived by her brother, Robert Lindsay Waldrop, Jr., of Rock Hill, SC, and her in-laws, Bob and Judy Nance, Tim and Rosemary Nance, Kit and Faye Nance, and Pat and Carolyn Nance. Beth was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Waldrop. Beth's family expresses their deepest gratitude to the many friends and caregivers who have so generously shared their love and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Timmerman School Building Fund or to the Dreher High School Foundation. My 14 year old son (and Dreher Freshman) had Mrs Nance at Timmerman. She was a great teacher and we were both so sad on hearing of the loss.

I'll never forget the moments we shared when you taught me Algebra. You were a very sweet and passionate woman. You will truly be missed but never forgotten!!

Mr Nance, It is with much sorrow and sadness in my heart that I send you and your family my deepest sympathy in the loss of your wife, Beth. I count you among the best teachers I ever had and will never forget your humor in the classroom and your love of your students. You were certainly a blessing in my life and I often recall with fondness and laughter the way you made learning science so much fun. I too share something in common with your wife, Beth. I am a 1994 graduate of Erskine College and know I did so well there thanks to teachers like you. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a very long time. Blessings and peace to you my dear friend and teacher; you will never be forgotten, nor will the countless ways you and your wife have made this world a better place, one child at a time.

Sincerely, Blair Young Lord, Dreher High School Class of 1990

Mrs. Nance was a spectacular teacher. I am so lucky to have had her for three years. I will never forget everything she taught me. She taught us to never give up and to be strong, care about others, laugh always, and she made math fun. Mrs. Nance will never be forgotten, and her legacy as an educator will live forever through her students.

I was so sad to here that Mrs. Nance had passed. She taught both my boys at Timmerman. She loved all her students and they loved her. She will be missed here on earth, but will forever have a place in our hearts and a home in heaven.

Prayers and thoughts to all the family of Mrs. Nance. My daughter attended Timmerman School for 10 years and had Mrs. Nance as a teacher and just loved her to pieces. We had come back to visit over the years and would always try to catch up with her as well. She will truly be missed, but good memories she made with all the many, many students she taught. God Bless all of you during this sad time. JoAnn, Bruce, Brittney White, Elgin, SC

I am deeply sadden by the loss of Mrs. Nance. She taught both my children at Timmerman and always, always took time out to speak to me whenever she saw me! My heart breaks for you, her family but I know God has a special place for her and she will forever be the guardian angel of all of those kids that loved her her so much!
