Elizabeth M. "Betty" Speck, age 94, of Wendy Lane, Burnt Hills, NY, died on January 2, 2023, at Ellis Hospital,
Schenectady, NY. She was born on December 9, 1928, in
Rockport, MA, the daughter of Scottish immigrants, the late George Marr Jr. and Jessie Ann (Knowles) Marr. Along with her older sisters, Mary, Margaret and Irene, Betty grew up in Rockport. After graduating from Rockport High School, she commuted by train to study at Fisher College in Boston before marrying her high school sweetheart, Robert "Bob" Speck, in 1949. The two settled into their loving home in Burnt Hills in 1958, where they raised their four children, and where she continued to live on her own after Bob passed away in 2013. She had recently moved to Judson Meadows Assisted Living in Glenville after living in her home on Wendy Lane for 65 years. For many years, Betty enjoyed sharing time with Bob attending family, academic, and sporting events where they were enthusiastic boosters. They were both fixtures at BH-BL and Union College soccer and ice hockey games, and at the Capital District Scottish Games. Each summer, the two of them gathered kids and grandkids together for vacation stays in their hometown of
Rockport, MA, spending time together with relatives on Long Beach and cheering for their beloved Red Sox. Betty was so proud of her children and grandchildren, their lives, their achievements, their togetherness. She will always be remembered for the home she kept for all of her family and the behind-the-scenes support that she steadfastly provided for her husband Bob's longstanding work in the community. Up until the end, she maintained her witty humor and her endearing concern for family and friends.
Beloved mother of Laurie Speck-Mach of
Broadalbin, NY; Robert Speck, Jr of Manchester Center, VT, Dr. Douglas Speck of West Newbury, VT, and Brian Speck of Burnt Hills; and mother-in-law of Jo Kirsch, Dr. Claire Bolon-Speck, and Kim Speck. Devoted grandmother of Heather and Brandon Mach; Alex Boyle (and his wife Nathalie) and Natalie Boyle (and her husband Chris Joyce); Emily, Megan, and Abby Speck; and Ian, Cameron, and Robert "Sean" Speck. Great grandmother of Oliver Boyle and John "Jack" Joyce. Predeceased by her sisters, Betty was the last survivor of her generation in the Marr Family. She was "Aunt Betty" for many nieces, nephews, and their families from all around the country. To her, we all bid "Ta ta for now"!
A celebration of life memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Sunday January 8, at the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 816 Route 50, Burnt Hills, NY. Following the service all are invited to attend a short reception at the church. Betty's cremated remains will be interred next to her husband in the family plot at Beech Grove Cemetery in
