Elizabeth van der Linde Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jun. 14 to Jun. 15, 2008.

Elizabeth D.

van der Linde

Our Mom was born on November 16, 1922, in Toronto, Canada and died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She has gone home to be with her husband of 53 years Captain H. E. "Pete" van der Linde who preceded her in death.

Our mother was a registered nurse, owned and managed "Blue Ridge Farm" in Free Union, Virginia for 20 years, designed and constructed a sailboat that she and our dad sailed from Canada to the Caribbean, volunteered and served on the board of the SPCA, volunteered and was a member of the "Friends of the Library", and volunteered at "Recording For The Blind and Dyslexic".

She passed her work ethic on to her four surviving sons, Bruce and his wife Pam, Peter and his wife, Jackie, Craig and his wife, Janet, and Derek. She is also survived by her brother, John Dowswell and his wife, Doreen; and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth T. "Babs" Jones; and niece, Lisa Beazell. She loved and supported her grand-children, Erin, Justin, Brook, Melody, Melissa, William and great-granddaughter, Emma and was so proud of them. Mom lived a full and exciting life and shared it with all of the people she loved. She will miss all of her swimming buddies and the ACAC crew.

As a family we want to thank all of the great people at the University of Virginia Medical Center and a special thanks to Dr. Charles E. "Ed" Rose Jr., whom my mother loved and respected.

There will be a memorial gathering from 3 until 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Recording For The Blind and Dyslexic to share memories of this very special lady.

Donations may be made in our mother's memory to "Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic."

Sending dear love to all the family of this special lady. What a wonderful friend she was to my mother and what fun the two couples had - and are now having.

Beth asked my husband, Ed, to work on the flower pot near the mailboxes on our street, Ravenscroft Way. She was the one who originally planted the flowers which were there when we moved here 7 years ago. And when the flowers wilted, she wanted them replaced. We Ansells hope that she noticed that the flowers and the urn were replaced about 2 weeks ago. Now they will be her legacy and will be kept in bloom in her honor.

The world is a lonelier place without Beth! She and Pete 'adopted' me in 1972 when I went to live on the Blue Ridge Farm in Free Union with Steve and Ditsy Haworth. Those were some wonderful years. Beth could move seamlessly from insemenating an Angus cow to laying Delft tiles around a fireplace. She also knew how to enjoy a cool drink in the shade of her wonderful trees. My best to all of you. She will be missed. Kathy Nelson Philhour

We are saddened but remember with love and admiration our next door neighbor for a number of years! What a wonderful and exciting lady she was and how blessed we feel to have been touched by Pete and Beth's kindness over the years. Our love and sympathy to all the family.
