ELLEN KANDER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 6 to Jun. 8, 2012.
KANDER
ELLEN (WEISS)
Passed away on June 5, 2012, after a brave, year-long battle with cholangia carcinoma, a rare cancer, at the age of 51. Born on March 28, 1961, Ellen graduated from Allderdice and went on to study Urban Affairs and Planning at George Washington University. She then earned a law degree from Boston University in 1987. Her future husband, Gregg Kander, could not help noticing her beautiful hair as he sat behind her in contracts class. After law school, the pair moved to New York City, where Ellen worked as special counsel to the derivative securities division at the American Stock Exchange. She would later insist that she had nothing to do with the invention or use of credit default swaps. She returned to Squirrel Hill in 1993 in order to be close to her extended family and to raise her three children. Ellen had an extremely rich civic life. She served on the board of directors for the Jewish Community Center, the Israeli Film Festival, and the Pittsburgh Children's Museum. She especially loved her work with the Hebrew Free Loan Association, an organization that grants interest-free loans to individuals and families in need. In 2002, Ellen cofounded and served as the executive director of the Steeltown Entertainment Project, a nonprofit organization that leverages the talent of a group of Pittsburgh-born entertainment visionaries in order to give back to the city. Most recently, she cofounded Cancer Be Glammed, a website that provides women undergoing surgery and treatment with advice and easy access to apparel and gifts to recover in comfort and style. She is also an alumna of the Wexner Heritage Leadership Program. Ellen's accomplishments were myriad, but all those that knew her - and there are so many - will remember her most for her beauty, her vivacity, her warmth, her sense of humor, and the kindness that she showed toward every person she met. Those who were lucky enough to know Ellen saw in her an inspiring example of life lived to the fullest and for whom she was an irreplaceable presence. She celebrated her 25th anniversary this year with her devoted husband, Gregg; her children, Ben, Jacob, and Kate; her parents, Jack and Andy Weiss; her sister, Stacy (Will Carpenter); her brother, Lou (Amy) Weiss; her extended family and countless friends survive Ellen. Services at Temple Sinai, 5505 Forbes Avenue, Squirrel Hill on Friday at 11 a.m.. NO PRIOR VISITATION. Entombment Homewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ellen Weiss Kander Award Fund, Pittsburgh Foundation, 5 PPG Place, Suite 250, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222-5414, (www.pittsburghfoundation.org), to benefit aspiring filmmakers. We were overcome with sadness to hear of Ellen's passing after her incredibly courageous battle. We can not imagine how much her family will miss her gentle soul. It is difficult to wrap our minds around the fact that she will never walk into our shop again. She always added such a bright light to our day. Ellen was beautiful inside and out and we can not express our sympathies enough for the loss of such a completely lovely person. Love to all friends and family. Ellen was my bunkmate at EKC in 1971. She radiated light and friendship even then, at that awkward age. She was just beautiful: inside and out. Andie, you were my beloved English teacher at Hillel when I was Barbara Meyers and helped me get through my own grief at my father's passing when I was but 13. I am so sorry that your granddaughter now faces a similar struggle and that you have lost your beautiful daughter. I pray for all of you, that you will have the strength to soldier on for goodness, life, and light; leaving a lasting monument to your beloved Ellen.

I had the privilege and honor of knowing the Kanders for many years.

On the weekends, I used to watch Greg and Ellen's children - Ben, Jake, and Katie- who have all grown and matured into such well mannered outstanding individuals just like their parents, Ellen and Greg.

Ellen and Greg were a lovely and classy couple and they complimented each other perfectly. Ellen was truly and remarkably an intelligent, graceful, genuine, honest, and kind individual.

My sincere condolences to the Kander/Weiss family; my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

My memories of Ellen are of a young girl, filled with energy and enthusiasm for all that life had to hold. Her family was terrific, her smile was infectuous, and her effect is lasting.

Many years ago, Ellen, Maxine Lapiduss, Sally Lapiduss, and I, the lone Catholic in the group, Ken Curley, would sit around the Lapiduss' kitchen table on Bartlett Street and write radio shows, which we would then perform on a rel-to-reel tape recorder.
Ellen was the true star of these and we all had a grand time because of her.

Ellen was truly the essence of youth, beauty, joy, and happiness that will continue to live on through her husband, children, and all who ever knew her. I was fortunate to have been one of those people.

My sincere sympathies and prayers to husband Gregg and to her entire family.
