On Thursday, April 27, 2023, Ellen Douglas Simpson went home to be with the Lord. Awaiting her arrival was her loving husband, Clarence; devoted parents, Tommie Lee, and Anna Arnada Gordon; and three beloved siblings, Pronty Lee Gordon, Dorothy (Dot) Bradley and John (Sonny Boy) Gordon.
Ellen was born March 14, 1930, in Johnstown, Pa. She enjoyed school and did well academically at East Conemaugh High. After graduating, she left home to live with aunts in Centerville, Tenn; Nashville; and Detroit, and worked in the nursing field. Ellen later moved to Chicago, where she worked at Cook County Hospital, then for many years, for the U.S. Postal Service. Once she was established in Chicago, she helped three of her siblings leave home for better opportunities.
Ellen met her first husband, Theodore (Ted) Banks, and from that union a son, Duane, and daughter, Claudia, were born. Some years later Ellen met and married her second husband, Clarence R. Simpson, and gained another daughter, Marjorie.
God blessed Ellen with two important gifts – the gifts of giving and hospitality. She was always quick to offer help and support – caring, sharing, feeding, clothing, sheltering, and counseling not just family, but so many others. Ellen always loved to cook, and her door was always open to family and friends to come in, take a seat and enjoy one of her famous meals.
Ellen began her spiritual journey at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Johnstown. As an adult, she joined Christ Universal Temple Among her favorite scriptures are “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." – Philippians 4: 11-13 and "Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love," 1 John 4:8.
Ellen is survived by her children, Duane Banks (Rose), Claudia Banks and Marjorie Fugh; grandchildren George Fugh, Brea Wimbley (Keenan); Teresa Banks and Asia Banks; great-grandchildren, Davis, Zora, and Keenan; siblings Harry Gordon and Ann Bailey. She also leaves a host of treasured nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
