Elton Pody Obituary
Services for Mr. Elton C. Pody will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria, with Pastor Bob Vincent officiating, assisted by Dr. B. David Brooks.
Graveside services will be at Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, 4599 Hwy 822, Dubach, Louisiana, 71235, at 3:30 p.m., under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Grace Church, 4900 Jackson St., Alexandria, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at Calvary Baptist Church.
Mr. Pody, 72, of Alexandria, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at his home with his loving family surrounding him.
He attended Grace Church, Alexandria. He was President of the Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce for twenty years. Mr. Pody came to Alexandria in 1991 after having served eight years as mayor of Ruston. He had spent the majority of his life in the Ruston/Farmerville area and was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University. His trademark statement was, "every man needs two things, God and a job". This philosophy was the driving focus of his activities to bring quality job creation in the communities where he served. Elton's parting remark to everyone he met was "Be Blessed".
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Henry Pody and Fannie Mae Bearden Pody.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 50 years, Sherry Williamson Pody; three sons, Stan Pody and wife Mary, Shawn Pody and wife Kelly, Chad Pody and wife Angie; one daughter, Sondra Pody Haygood and husband Greg; one sister, Lola Faye Pody Silmon; and eleven grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Stan Pody, Shawn Pody, Chad Pody, Greg Haygood, Caleb Haygood, and Kevin Viator. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Ranson, Cynthia Graham, Jay Ellington, Chris Workman, and Brady Baudin.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the LSU Alexandria Foundation, annotated for "The Elton C. Pody Scholarship Fund", c/o Melinda Anderson, LSU Foundation, (318) 619-2916.

Ms. Pody, the last time I heard Mr. Pody's voice was the Friday before his death. He had left a message for me asking for help for someone else and during the last conversation we shared He took time to lift my spirits and talk of God's love for us all. I am a firm believer that God puts people in our lives for a specific purpose. And I also believe God put Mr. Elton in my life to teach me patience, to help me appreciate the gift of friendship and to focus on God. I am blessed to have known and called Mr. Elton friend.

Sherry, Larry and I have been keeping up with Elton's progress for some time and was so saddened by his demise. Just know that we have prayed and God had other plans, of which I am sure, will be understood when you meet Christ yourself. Larry developed back and leg pain Monday and is still lingering today. My encounters with Mr. Pody, were all to few and most often involved a duckblind and a sunrise. I never once heard the southern gentlemen complain, and he missed many an opportunity given our frigid Kansas winters.
The one thing that struck me - is how admired and loved he was by his grandchildren. The mutual respect (and admiration) Elton shared with his grandson, Caleb Haygood moved me.

There are so many words to describe Elton - loving, gentlemanly, wonderful, kind, etc..., but the one that comes to my mind the most is loved. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing him, loved him. He was like a big teddy bear. You all are in my thoughts and prayers; however, I can't help but smile when I think of Elton right now. No pain, no tears, no needles just almost running seeing all the sights, meeting all the people, singing, and above all seeing our Heavenly Father. Sherry and family, I know you will miss him greatly, but he has only taken a little journey that you will join him soon.
