Elvin Hicks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2025.
Elvin Hicks was born on February 1, 1947, in Leland, Mississippi, to Willie and Artie Hicks. He was one of eighteen children and the beloved fraternal twin of Melvin Hicks.

Elvin attended Froebel High School in Gary, Indiana, where he was a star basketball player. Known affectionately as Elvin "Blue" Hicks, he lit up the court with his skill and heart. His passion for the game followed him long after high school. Even after moving to Indianapolis, he made it a point to return to Gary for school reunions, where he played in alumni basketball tournaments held at Roosevelt High School-memories that many still hold dear.

Though he did not graduate, Elvin later earned his GED, a testament to his determination and resilience.

Before entering the military, Elvin worked hard to support himself and his family, holding jobs at an array of steel mills before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

After serving his country honorably, Elvin continued to work in truck driving and furniture delivery, then at Rockwell, before ultimately finding his calling in flooring. He built a respected career and worked with pride until he retired in his 60s.

Elvin was deeply loved for his loyalty, strength, humor, and generosity. He gave freely of himself-offering food, rides, wisdom, and shelter to many who needed it. His presence was felt by all who encountered him.

Elvin passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Artie Hicks, and all of his departed siblings.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters Daisy Hicks and Millie Ann (Rico) Freeman; his daughters Valerie (Cary) Stewart, Michelle (James) Stokes, and Elysa (Steven) Shelton; his son Glenn Robinson II; and his cherished grandchildren: Tyeisha Barns, Bianca King, Darnell Hicks, James Stokes Jr., Jaylen Stokes, Curisha Hicks, Tamika Hicks, Jamie Robinson, Glenn Robinson III, Gelan Robinson, and Gicarri Harris. He also leaves behind many great-grandchildren and a loving extended family.

To the Family of Elvin Hicks you have my deepest sympathy in his death but heaven gain. I have known Elvin since childhood days growing up on Adams street. Elvin and family from Floyd down was like brothers to our family. We had many fun days at the neighborhood house Froebel School games and picnics. As well as our house. Elvin loved family and loved friends. Froebel chain has been broken by death not the love we have for our Classmates. Elvin will be missed but now receive what God promised Eternal life. Flame and Blue forever love for you never dies.
