Emily Bethke Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 1 to Oct. 2, 2009.
September 22, 1981 September 25, 2009 Born in Milwaukee, WI, Emily grew up in St. Paul and Oakdale, MN, and passed away suddenly in Colorado Springs, CO, where she worked as a hairdresser and was a student at Pike's Peak Community College, where she was working towards a degree in Social Work. A beautiful and brilliant woman with a wonderful smile, she was loved by all who knew her for her wit, laughter, adventurous spirit, generosity, artistic talent, commitment to the environment, helping others, and to Harry Potter fandom. She is survived by her parents, Bruce Bethke and Nancy Rotramel; her siblings, Daniel Patz and Veronica, Frances, and Samuel Bethke; her stepmother Karen; her grandmothers Charlotte Bethke and Arleen Rotramel; her best friend and "hetero life partner" Erynn Kerwin; her sweetheart Shaun Short; and many other friends and relatives. She will be missed by all who knew her. Emily was a bright shining star who blessed our lives for 28 too-short years. A memorial service was held for her friends in Colorado Springs on Tuesday, 9/29/09, and a celebration of her life will be held in Minnesota at St. Mary's Episcopal Church 8435 So. St. Croix Tr., Basswood Grove, Denmark Township, on Saturday, 10/3/09. Visitation begins at noon with the service to begin at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado Inc., www.bbbscolo.org. 651-459-2875

I just heard the sad news. For the last year and half Emily cut my hair. I always enjoyed my monthly visits. Emily always had a glowing smile and knew exactly how i liked my hair cut. We would just talk and laugh the whole time. She will be missed.

On behalf of everyone in Emily's social work class our deepest sympathies to her family. She brought a lot to our classroom with her friendly smile which we will always remember and cherish, her Harry Potter t-shirt, her beautiful hair - she was a warm human being with a passion for social work. She volunteered at the Marion House Soup Kitchen here in Colorado Springs and she impacted our community through her volunteer work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. She will be missed.

Emily cut my hair for the past several years, gave my daughter her first haircut (we have pictures), came to the house to cut our hair when she was between employers, celebrated the birth of our second child with us, and always provided stimulating conversation while I was in the chair. I will miss her so much. I never met her friends, heard some about her family, and always enjoyed hearing about her studies, travels, and thoughts. God bless her and her family and friends.

It's been 10 years since Emily and I have spoken, but I still remember all of the weekends she spent at my house, and all of the really fun times we had. I am saddened to hear about her passing, and know that she will be really missed, and was loved by a lot of people.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Emily's passing. It has been over 10 years since the last time I saw her, but only have positive memories of her. She was a beautiful person and I am truly sorry for her friends and family.

I only met Emily once when she was a young child. From reading her life story it is obvious that she grew up to be a beautiful young woman who comforted and inspired others. May your abundant memories of her soften your grief and may you cherish the hope that you will be reunited again in heaven. My prayers are with your family at this challenging time in your lives.

Emily was a really good friend of mine years back, and I am sad to say we lost touch when she moved to colorado. She was a wonderfully bright and funny person. I miss her already and my heart goes out to her family and closest friends.

To the friends and family of Emily:

I attended Tartan with Emily and although we weren't so- called day to day friends I'd like to express what I saw at a glance. Emily always had a smile on her face. There was a gentle side that showed a sense of peace. A bright aura and an extremely bright individual!

Last night I spoke on the phone with a friend who happened to mention that he was picked on in High School over a very sensitive issue and she was there to comfort him and assure him other people can be cruel and insensitive; unlike her. This is the person Emily was and you as her family and friends should be very proud. She did leave an impact in many people's lives even if to her it went unsaid.

My condolences to all of you and I will pray that you find peace through this tragic loss.

Sincerely,

Aja Ngbemeneh

Nancy,

I don't know what to say! I am shocked and so sad to hear of the loss of your daughter Emily. You spoke of her so much and with so much love and respect. I pray for understanding in her passing and know that she is in a much better place smiling down upon you and watching over you.

Nancy & family, Emily was a very beautiful person the little I knew her. I knew of your love and your pride in all your children and I know that this shining star is in the hands of God. As your friend I will be there and am only a call a way . My deepest sympathy, thoughts, prayers and a shoulder if you should need it.

My deepest and sincerest condolences to Emily's friends and family.

Emily had an enormous impact on my life that I hadn't thought about until reflecting upon her role in my past.

I first met Emily at the age of 16. She was my first mainstream friend, one who showed me theres much more beyond a shy and sheltered, religious life. Emily introduced me to a lot of her friends and was never hesitant about encouraging me to be more social.

Always smiling and always willing to offer a hand, Emily helped make each day that I worked with her a joy. She was a great person to have known and her unique ability to change others into happier people will definitely be missed.

Emily was along for a day that we all went to a local theme-park with our work-crew in the late 90's. That day is still considered, to myself, one of the most joy-filled and happiest days of my life. I am glad to have been there, to have seen and experienced the friendship and personality that Emily always carried with her.

My sincerest condolences to her Family, Friends and Loved ones, especially Erynn.

All of us will miss you, Emily.
