Emily Soto, age 9, of Portage passed away on November 14, 2022. She was born on March 6, 2013 in Merrillville, Indiana.
Emily was a light in everyone’s life, full of kindness, compassion, and joy. She brought happiness to everyone she knew. Her favorite color was green and her favorite number was 5. Emily was baptized December 5, 2021, and she loved the Lord with all her heart. Emily was athletic, loved sports, gymnastics, flipping and climbing. She was a “monkey”. She enjoyed fishing, nature walks, exploring, skating, music, drawing, painting, latch hooking, dancing, and singing. She was very creative, loved school and hanging out with her Chess Club friends. She loved her family all her heart. Emily loved turtles and went nowhere without Takis. Emily loved the beach, fall was her favorite season and enjoyed the snow. Emily collected pop-its/slime and loved her best friends, Jazzy and Mavis. Emily was the one to always lend a helping hand and hold the door open for someone else. Her talent and gift were her voice and she wanted to use it to sing to God. She sang in the church choir and was a witness to her sister Anna announce her faith in God and be baptized. This was her one wish in life and her prayers were answered. Emily loved her pet cat Luna. Emily had a heart of gold. Emily was preceded in death by her grandmother Esther Espinosa. She is survived by her mother, Lisa Marie Soto and her father Joseph Eluterio Soto; two sisters, Anna Marie Soto and Ashley Mikayla Soto; two brothers, Joseph Connor and Jesse Michael Soto; Grandma, Cheryl Reilly and Grandpa Patrick Reilly of Lake Station; Uncle Robert Matthew Reilly (Megan Conners) of Portage; cousins, Zander and Natalie Reilly; Great grandpa, Robert Matthew Reilly (Gail) of Chicago, IL; Great grandmother, Margarita Espinosa; Aunts, Mary (Polo) Soto Cruz, Evelyn (Javier) Mendoza, Lucy (Elliot) Marquez, Linda Espinosa and JoAnn Roman, Uncle Jesse Soto; Cousins, Mari, Jazmin, Josue, Monica, Javier, Alexis, Jaysin, Joshua and Joaquin Gracia; and many more various great uncles, aunts and cousins. All services were private. Arrangements were entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, Indiana. To share online condolences, visit www.Reesfuneralhomes.com.

I will treasure that big tight hug you gave me when I told you that you sang so beautiful on the day of your grandma Esther's funeral. Now, you are with our Lord and with grandma Esther; give her the same tight hug from me. Rest in Peace!

Lisa, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My heart aches for you all. I pray that God gives you the strength you need to persevere through this incredibly difficult time. I take comfort in knowing that God is holding Emily in the palm of His hand and you will one day be reunited with her in paradise. Please let me know if you ever need anything.

My Beloved daughter I love you with all my heart and when you left me I felt my soul leave with you in that moment. I love you and miss you with all my mind heart and soul. Watch over us and give mommy the strength I need to keep going that’s what you’d want me to do. I rejoice in knowing you are with the Lord and you are in paradise. I will see you again, and I know you’ll be the first face I see and enter eternal life again to be with my daughter forever in a much better place than this world. Fly high and watch over us below. Your Bible is now mine and I will use this everyday to seek God and continue on also feeling your presence. I love you Emma Rose
