Lumpkin, GA- Pastor Emma Jean Devorce Thomas, daughter of the last William Devorce and the late Gussie Cherry Devorce, was born August 2, 1950 in Lumpkin, Georgia.
She matriculated through the public schools of Lumpkin, Georgia. Later, she attended the Georgia School of Ministry under the Assembly of God, Macon, Georgia and Apex School of Theology under Dr. Sandra Anderson, Columbus, Georgia. She accepted Christ early in life as her Lord and Savior.
In 1974, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Elder Jake Thomas, Sr. She was dedicated to the Lord's work as she helped her husband in pastoring Holy Tabernacle #2 in Andulasia, Alabama and Solid Rock Deliverance Center in Eufaula, Alabama. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother and will be dearly missed by those who knew her. To know her was to love her. After the Lord called her husband home, she became pastor of Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance, Inc. In 2008, Pastor Emma Thomas was appointed Overseer of Free Chapel Assembly of God in Richland, Georgia.
On Sunday, July 22, 2012, she peacefully went to be with the Lord in the serenity of her home.
Treasured memories will remain with her son, Eric Devorce, Columbus, Georgia; two granddaughters, Erykah Hart Devorce, Richland, Georgia and Amber Nichole Devorce, Columbus, Georgia; five brothers, Tommie Lee (Queen) Cherry, Richland, Georgia, Charlie (Mary) Devorce, Lumpkin, Georgia, Retired Sgt. First Class, Eddie (Cathryn) Devorce, El Paso, Texas, Melvin (Bertha) Devorce, Lumpkin, Georgia, and Dexter (Twanna) Devorce, Columbus, Georgia; three sisters, Pastor Gennet (Ray) Josey, Richland, Georgia, Auguster Devorce (Thomas Lewis), Columbus, Georgia, and Jackolyn (Major Larry J.) Waye, Cherry Point, North Carolina; four stepsons and three stepdaughters; one great-aunt, Ludie Will McNeal, Richland, Georgia; two aunts, Minnie Walton, Lumpkin, Georgia and Elizabeth Cherry, Yonkers, New York; one uncle, Charlie (Mary) Cherry, Columbus, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
God is calling His children from labor to reward. He chooses Hid followers carefully. And now, Emma is a part of his garden.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 12:30 P.M. at Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance, Inc., 89 Church Street, Lumpkin, Georgia. The burial will follow in New St. Mathis A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Louvale, Georgia.

Our Heavenly Father has called another of his faithful children home. Emma was a beautiful, caring, and Godly woman. My life was enriched by being able to call her my friend and my sister in Christ. May God go with her family and give them peace in knowing she is at home now in the arms of her loving Father.
