LEWISBURG - Emma A. Walters, 94, of 455 S. 19th St., died early Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
A native of Union County, she was born Jan. 20, 1914, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Dale Reese and Mary Louisa (Marsh) Angstadt. In 1939, she married Melvin G. Walters who preceded her in death in 1982.
Emma was a Summa Cum Laude graduate and was president of the Lewisburg High School, Class of 1932, which was the first class to attend the present building for all four years of high school. She was a graduate of Bucknell University in 1936.
Emma was a special education teacher at the Laurelton Center until her retirement in 1974.
She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, and a life member of the Kratzer-Dull Post 182 American Legion Auxiliary of Lewisburg. Emma was an American Cancer Society volunteer, was active in many different ways for the Library of Union County, and belonged to the Union County Historical Society.
Emma enjoyed playing Bridge weekly, loved to travel especially to Cape Cod. She enjoyed sports and was an avid Phillies fan for her entire life. She loved watching her grandson Brian participate in athletics, and enjoyed spending time with her family.
She was a proud mother to her daughter, Linda W. Hess of Lewisburg, and a devoted grandmother to Brigette Hess of Harrisburg, and Brian Hess of Ft. Mill, S.C.; she adored her great-grandchildren, Steven Barnhart and Jordyn Hess, all of whom, survive. She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Mollie and Bill Nelson of Lewisburg, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Bob Angstandt in 1999.
Friends and relatives will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth Streets, Lewisburg, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John H. Shaw III officiating.
Burial will follow in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family will provide flowers and asks that donations in Emma's memory be made to the Union County Public Library, 255 Reitz Blvd., Lewisburg, PA 17837.
